My mother-in-law is a formidable woman her maiden name is Ivy

there be a link?
I doubt very much that there will be a link between my 5 x great grandmother,
Jane MOSES and your Mother in law Ivy MOSES.
It is one of those Welsh naming things.
My Jane's father was probably called Moses SURNAME, if he had a son called
John and a grandson called William his son would be John MOSES but his
grandson would be William JONES :-(
Your Ivy, being from Brecon (if she isn't of immigrant stock) would have her
MOSES as a fixed surname in that area from about 1800.
With such an unusual "fixed" Welsh surname, it shouldn't be too hard to
trace. If you know of a parent or grandparent born before 1901.
The 1901 fiche seem (because, or in spite of, the on-line fiasco) to be very
much available for lookups. Have you asked for a search on the Powys list?
If you can find a Brecon MOSES in 1901, 1881 is on the LDS CD, which is a
small jump back, and the BRE 1851 census is also available on CD (I think
that BRE 1841 is also on fiche but I'm not 100% sure).
Have you found a definite link to your Barrows in Merioneth yet? Since you
mentioned the name I seem to be seeing Barrows in every PR I read or grave
yard I visit!
All the best
