Thank you for the information provided. It has pin-pointed the precise location where my gggg grandfather (and his wife) lived. He was Richard Griffith (born approx 1751, d 1827) and his wife was Blanch Owen (b approx 1751 and d 1817), both shown in the parish records as being at Troed Y Rhiw.

Dear all
Something to look forward to, NLW are digitalising Welsh newspapers
(which are out of copyright) and will be freely available online:

I'm probably more excited about this than I should be!

The following is a list of the occupants of Hafod Uchel, Parish of
Llanfor. The parish boundaries hereabouts are difficult to trace. On
the map it appears as if Hafod Uchel is in Llandderfel, but the
parish boundary between Llanfor and Llanddrefel heads east/west along
the Afon Clewtwr to the north of Hafod Uchel, roughly in a line from
Ty Nant to the Queen's Quarry. The same line appears in older OS
maps on the Old Maps site. The census takers (1841-1871) included
Hafod Uchel in the Parish of Llanfor.
The census returns for Hafod Uchel in 1841 and 1851 are difficult to
match into a clear generational sequence. Things settle down in 1861,
but the census transcribers clearly had difficulty with the name of
the head of household which becomes "Ioan" Richards - Welsh for John.
Ioan Richards and his family moved to different farms in the area. I
did not track him in 1891, but noted on Free BMD that his wife Grace
Richards probably died in 1889 aged 62.

I have the following questions given the to-ing and fro-ing on the
subject associated with John Richards and his whereabouts in the
Penllyn area.
Who is the John Richard(s) in the Penllyn area who might be the
beneficiary named "John Richards, nephew", and "John Richards,
Nephew, Bala," in the wills of William Richard(s) (dated 1834) and
Jane Evans (dated 1844), both of Deunant, Llanymawddwy?
Is it certain that the benficiary is John Richards of Hafod Uchel in
the Township of Rhiwaedog Is Afon in the Parish of Llanfor (1841
Census), or is there someone else of that name who might fit?
If it is John Richards of Hafod Uchel in the Township of Rhiwaedog is
Afon, what happened to him after the 1841 census?

John Richards lived at Hafod Uchel in 1841 not Hafod Uwch. I'm afraid the two farms do not border each other at all, they are in completely different valleys, one in Cwm Cynllwyd and the other in Caletwr to the south of Llandderfel.
