Hello Rhian It would be great if you could ask about Rehoboth's registers (I spelt it right this time!). Bangor Uni seems to have some of their bapt records - 1822 to 1914 as do NLW but I can't find any mention of marriages or burials ... and I don't think the GFHS has recorded the MIs for its cemetery, which is a shame. As my gggrandfather William (buried in Ramoth) was born in Llandanwg/Harlech and his father, Robert William(s), a butcher, lived in Harlech, I'm hoping he and his wife were also Scotch Baptists and possibly attended Rehoboth and are buried there. I thought the chapels were a bit more austere than some. I was brought up as a Methodist in Flintshire (my Taid, the Scotch Bapt, married a Wesleyan and appears to have converted) and our chapels were a little less plain on the inside and rather grander from the outside - but I was impressed that Rehoboth was carpeted! I was surprised that only En-gedi said it was Scotch Baptist. Ramoth and Rehoboth simply had the date they were built (or in the case of Ramoth, rebuilt cos it was dated 1904 (Revival time!) but there must have been a chapel there before then, I assume? No rush at all re the details of the booklet. As you clearly know Harlech well, you don't happen to know if Dorkinton Place or Dorkinton Alley are still there? That's where my family lived in the 1840s/50s. They also lived next door to the Blue Lion which (or so the internet tells me) was Y Plas and is now the Spar. P.S. The baptismal well is about a couple of hundred yards up the lane above Rehoboth. Instead of turning left to the chapel carry on up the steep hill and it's on the right, with a new plaque stating "Scotch Baptist Baptism Well Built 1841"

Lindsay.
I am assuming that you have already made enquiries at the Dolgellau
Archives - they have records of inscriptions on gravestones in most burial
grounds in the county and have myself been looking for Roberts family in
Talsarnau - succesfully I might add.

Oh my! I wish I was going for a week not a weekend!
I must definitely do the Harlech ones (I think I'll walk or I'll probably miss the cemies). I think I've located Engeli - do you recall if it is on a crossroads of 2 minor road south east of Harlech? If so there is no evidence of a graveyard from Google Earth but if I've time I'd like to get to see it.
I've got the MI booklet of St Twrog's. I didn't find them there. I didn't know that church cemeteries might have areas for nonconformist burials, interesting and something I need to bear in mind in the future.
Urtica sounds very promising as the family were living on a farm up above Gellilydan when William died, so I must try to get there but as I doubt if I will get around all the graveyards so I need to resort to the GFHS booklets.
If you could find the details of the book(let) about the Scotch Baptists without too much trouble, I'd be very grateful. The only bit of info I have on them is from the T M Bassett book 'The Welsh Baptists' which doesn't have much. No doubt the book(let) will test my Welsh (which is dire) but I should be able to get the gist of it.
I'm really looking forward to the weekend. Many thanks

There is a Scotch Baptist chapel and cemetery in Harlech called Rehoboth
with the chapel still open. Go to the centre of Harlech (using the high road
not the coast road) and (coming from the direction of Talsarnau) find the
cross roads above the castle. Take the left hand turn up a *very* very steep
hill, then about 100 yards up take another steep turn up to your left.
Rehoboth is on your left as you go up with an older graveyard around the
chapel (gate open) with a newer ie 20th century (I think) two cemeteries a
few yards further up the lane where there is a tiny parking space. You can
either turn round and drive back down the same way or take the lane to your
right as you've parked when you will come out to the steep hill you started
on and need to turn right down it. Its entrance is more difficult to find
going up. If walking, take several stops! The view from the top is amazing.
I think there is a much older tiny graveyard on the left on the hill going
down by the castle but it is difficult to find and extremely overgrown (at
least it was about 5 years ago when I visited), but this could be the
mainstream kind of Baptists. There is also another Scottish Baptist chapel
called Engedi (again still open) in the hills above Harlech / Llanfair but
as far as I can remember there is no graveyard with it.
If you want the history of the churches there is quite a rare book(let)
whose name I've forgotten this minute as well as a biography of John Jones
Ramoth who founded the denomination in Wales. Both are in Welsh. Let me know
if you want details.
Regarding Maentwrog, there are sections of St Twrog's churchyard in the
centre of the village in which non conformists are buried as well as the
more obvious Anglicans. Nonconformists also went to Utica to be buried,
although more from the top part of Maentwrog parish. Take the main road from
Maentwrog to Trawsfynydd, pass the turning for Gellilydan on your right,
then for Blaenau Ffestiniog on your left, then pass a small laybye on your
left, ignoring a lane turning near it, then look out for a house and chapel
on your left with a laybye opposite; all of this before you come to the
power station. Take care as you cross to park - the traffic comes along very
fast. The graveyard is on the Trawsfynydd side of the chapel rather hidden
behind a wall. It isn't that large so quite easily searched.
You won't have time before next weekend to get hold of them possibly but St
Twrog Maentwrog MIs have been recorded by Gwynedd Family History Society
http://www.gwyneddfhs.org/ as has Utica, St Tanwg Harlech, Moreia Harlech
(Calvinistic Methodist - very overgrown last time I went there but sometimes
cut I know - on a lane going down not far from the parking ground in the
centre of Harlech beyond Spar), as well as Llandecwyn, Nazareth and St
Mihangel, Llanfihangel y Traethau. It would save an awful lot of searching!
Best luck
Rhian

There is a church (not scotch baptist) at Llanfihangel y traethau which you will find is actually in the village signposted as Ynys between Talsarnau and Harlech. You might also like to look at the gravestones at llandecwyn just north of Talsarnau as they came under the same parish as far as I know. The minister and his wife at llandanwg are very friendly and might well be able to help you. I'm sure I've found their contact details online in the past. Hope your trip is a success.

Hello
I'm treating myself to a one night stay in Maentwrog next weekend and am hoping to track down a family grave (or 2 or 3 or 4) or chapels they may have attended but I don't know where to start.
In particular I'm looking for my gggrandparents William and Margaret Roberts. Margaret died in June 1893 in Blaenau but is not buried there. She is probably buried with her husband William of Cae Einion Alun, Maentwrog who died in the late 1860s (probably!). They originally came from Llanfihangel y traethau (Talsarnau) and somewhere (probably Harlech) in Llandanwg parish. One or both of them were Scotch Baptists.
Could anyone please suggest any chapels where they might have been buried/attended?
Does anyone know where the Scotch Baptist chapels were in the area and if any are still there today?
Could anyone point me in the direction of info on the Scotch Baptists, I'm having difficulty finding out much about them though I understand they originated from Llanfrothen and /or Harlech Any info gratefully received
