Hello all
Tracking my Anne Jones, from Merioneth, was also very difficult. However, when we found her Welsh bible (it was with a cousin), she had listed her parents and siblings as Thomas Jones. Her father was variously registered on her siblings' records, though, as Thomas Thomas, Thomas Thomas Jones, Thomas Jones Thomas or Thomas Jones. Her father's father was listed on a wedding certificate as Owen Thomas Thomas. They were from Dolgellau. I would never have foiund her otherwise as I didn't know her mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Williams.

Hello Patricia
Yes they are tough these Robertses and Joneses, though I do have another lot of Joneses (with Davieses this time) in Bagillt Flintshire which have proved much easier.
I've recently joined the Gwynedd FHS, even if it doesn't help me find my Merioneth Roberts and Joneses at least I'll feel I have a bit of moral support!
I'm currently trying to get my Anne Jones sorted so I can add her (and with a lot of luck, her family too) to my list of member's interests for the next edition of the journal.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this Dolweddelan Anne is going to be my breakthrough - but if not I'll keep going and I'll be back seeking more help.
Thank you again

Hey that's great. I have been in touch with them already as I found a marriage (the wrong one, of course) but by writing to them (quite slow). The Gwynedd FHS journal only lists their address - no email or phone no. as does the website of the Register Offices of Eng & Wales. I never thought of looking at Conwy's own website!!
I shall email them now .....
Many thanks.

Why don't you contact the Register office at Llandudno which covers the
Dolwyddelan area. An email request giving dates, names etc might turn up
trumps. They are more than helpful in my experience.

Gennasaret Chapel (Independent) was still in use in the 1880's and Moriah
Chapel (Methodist) was opened on the 6th of October 1880, most probably they
had a licence to marry from the opening of the chapel.

I can find an Anne Jones in June Q 1886 Llanrwst .... but no Robert Roberts (unless I'm not looking properly or not in the right place).
I think you are right that Dolwyddelan is in the Llanrwst District but when I looked around for places they might have married in in Dolwyddelan itself, I could only find the Parish Church (unlikely) and if they had to travel as far as Llanrwst itself it would seem unlikely that they married in that District. But then I think they must have married there cos they did not marry in Ffestiniog District (nor Pwllheli Dist either - I've tried there too). It is really annoying cos I can't find anything about Anne and the Jones family unless I can find that marriage.

Can anyone help with a bit of info on places of worship in the Dolwyddelan area please?
I'm having great difficulty tracking down the marriage in the late 1880s of my great grandparents (not surprising - they were Robert Roberts and Anne Jones). They were (I think) both living in Blaenau before they married but, I can't find the correct marriage in the Ffestiniog District.
I think Anne's family might be from Dolwyddelan and therefore Robert and Anne might have married there. But where would they have married? - they were non-conformist, so not the Parish Church. I can't find out if there were any chapels in Dolwyddelan in the late 1880s.
Does anyone know where the nearest chapels were? (I'm not sure which denomination - probably Methodist or Baptist) Might they have had to travel as far as Llanrwst perhaps?

Hi Michelle
I'm glad you found the historicaldirectories site - it is very good.
Licences to sell alcohol in inns were issued at the quarter sessions by
the
magistrates. I've seen ones at a later period for Bala. If there are
ones
for the period you want, they would be at Dolgellau Record Office.
Some of
their quarter sessions records are online if you go to a2a > Wales, as

There is always the chance of a reference on the National Library of
Wales

No will for David Roberts, just a bond and an inventory, but either document
may give you the name of the Inn. Morris Roberts may be related and his
will will likely provide more information. If you order a copy from the
National Library of Wales, there is a minimum charge so it may cost you
no extra to get both.

Hi Michelle
I'm glad you found the historicaldirectories site - it is very good.
Licences to sell alcohol in inns were issued at the quarter sessions by the
magistrates. I've seen ones at a later period for Bala. If there are ones
for the period you want, they would be at Dolgellau Record Office. Some of
their quarter sessions records are online if you go to a2a > Wales, as are
indexes of wills which may help.
There is always the chance of a reference on the National Library of Wales
on-line catalogue.

Hi Glynne,
I wonder if your Gwen's brother David ROBERTS could have been related to
(or the same man as) my David ROBERTS, innkeeper in Dolgellau, married
to Ellen or Eleanor, in 1806. I don't know anything more about him, but
their son, David ROBERTS born/baptized in Dolgellau in 1806, married
Catharine HUMPHREYS (daughter of David HUMPHREYS, clerk, and Margaret of
Mallwyd) in Mallwyd in 1827. David and Catharine had several children
and ended up settling in Boston, Massachusetts. Their son, Lewis, was my
g-g-grandfather.
I have more information about David and Catharine and their two oldest
sons, David and Lewis, here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mstone/davidroberts60.htm
Do you know when your David ROBERTS (Gwen's brother) was born and died?
Did he have a wife and family?

Hi Pam,
Thanks so much for the suggestion. I found the wealth of historical
directories at this site:
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp
which I did not know about. It is a great resource. Unfortunately, there
are no historical directories there covering Dolgelley any earlier than
1828, and that one does not show a David Roberts as an innkeeper (circa
1806).
You said: "It might also be in licences granted at the Quarter Sessions
- Dolgellau RO." What does this mean and where do I find that?
Grateful to you,
Michelle

Hello na,
My first posting.
My x3 great grandfather John Jones b.1789 d.1860; married his second wife Gwen Roberts in 1841 in Dolgellau. She was the Innkeeper at the Crossfoxes Eldon Sq. I'm wondering if there are any decendants of Gwen.
I haven't seen any record that they had children form this marriage but she had a brother who lived at the inn with them. John Jones, Gwen Jones and David Roberts ,Gwen's brother are buried in Eglwys Santes Fair, Dolgellau.
