I'm interested in gathering information about the PATAGONIAN WELSH who
immigrated to Saskatchewan in the early 1900's. I've been able to trace the
descendants of Reverend William T. MORRIS who was a member of this group and
homesteaded near Atwater. Any suggestions about historical studies, local
newspapers or other members of this group would be appreciated.

Yesterday I bought 2 books that may be of interest to readers. The first I
bought at "Siop Lyfrau'r Hen Bost" at Blaenau Ffestiniog, the second at
"Awen Meirion" at Bala - both very good bookshops, highly recommended. Both
books are in English, by Susan Wilkinson, published by Y Lolfa.
1) "MIMOSA : the life & times of the ship that sailed to Patagonia", £12.95.
Of particular interest to me was the section (pp129-137) on "Mimosa's
People", which gives personal details of some of the passengers on the 1865
voyage to Patagonia. Two references to Llandrillo caught my eye - Catherine,
the 31 year old wife of William JONES of Rhiwlas, Bala, came from
Llandrillo; John, the 11 month old son of Catherine & Robert DAVIES of
Llandrillo, & who died at sea, was suffering from hydrocephaly (water on the
brain). In addition to having an appendix listing the passengers (with ages
& places of origin), the book contains details of the actual voyage, the
landing, and the start of the new colony. Although this account of the
Patagonia Voyage makes up only part of the book (pp115-178, in a book of 247
pages including appendices, notes, bibliography etc) the other sections
provide a useful context for what is (to me at least) the central part of
the book.
2) "MIMOSA'S VOYAGES : official logs, crew lists and masters", £6.95.
Esentially transcribed records of the Mimosa's various voyages from 1853 to
1872, listing the ship's masters and crews, with the official logs.
Once again the Patagonia Voyage was of particular interest to me - details
of births (2), marriages (1), & deaths (4) - while the other sections
provided a fascinating glimpse into life at sea in those days.
I have looked up "Mimosa" on the TheShipsList.com website, and found that
it provided a link to the ship "Numidian" - a passenger list for June 1902
(Liverpool to Quebec) shows several hundred Welsh people.

Dear Gary and list,
I am very interested to read about your Cadwaladr/er connection as my family connects in the early 19th century with a farm called Llwynmawr in Bala which has a long line of William Cadwaladers and Cadwalader Williams going back to the late 17th century. Whether or not my family are related to the Cadwaladers/Williams is not clear at the moment but circumstantial evidence points that way.
Cadwalader seems to have been a common christian and surname in Bala and surrounds throughout time but i would be interested to know in which direction your researches take you.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Thompson

Dear Listers
I have no idea what the odds are of locating an ancestral family bible from
the other side of the world but that is just what I've done!
Trawling through eBay looking for items connected with Barmouth (my father's
family home) I came across a Welsh bible dated 1883 which had belonged to
Jeanie
RICHARDS, Barmouth. Well, all my family history bells rang at once!!
My Nain was known as Jane/Jennie and her maiden name was RICHARDS (b 1878
Barmouth) so I asked the seller for a photo of the inscription inside the
bible and
back it came showing: "Jeanie Richards, Tal y Don, Barmouth". I nearly fell
off my chair with excitement as Tal y Don was where she was living in 1901
with her mother, stepfather and two half-siblings! Sadly, her own father,
John
RICHARDS had died of TB in 1880 (aged 31 years) as had all her younger
siblings (also of TB). Her mother, Anne (nee GRIFFITHS) had remarried in
1886 to William OWEN, grocer of Barmouth.
Having told my brother in England of this incredible find, he kindly offered
to bid for the bible, which he did yesterday. So, somehow this old
Welsh family bible ended up in England, was found on eBay by myself (living
in Australia), and is now safely back in family hands. I'll have to make
sure we put a page in the bible telling this extraordinary story for future
generations!
Lizzie (still pinching myself)
Canberra, Australia
The tale of the Barmouth bible is wonderful. I often see old photographs
at bric a brack and antique, fairs and find it very sad that they are
just disposed of. We have a family bible, from my paternal grandmother's
side but nobody bothered to put any entries in it, no doubt there was a
reason. Again Tb claimed quite a few lives in that family, housing stock
in Anglesey was very poor, but the family lived in a terraced house. Bob

Just shows how serendipity is a useful as structured research at

Hello RB
Tredegar is in Monmouthshire (South Wales)(between Merthyr Tydfil and Ebbw Vale)
Llanfachreth (Merionethshire) is near mid-west coast - close to Barmouth (if you're trying to locate it on a map)
Distance approx 120 miles, according to old road atlas.
Hope this helps.

Message Board Post:
Are there any records of people leaving Wales for America in the period 1700-1740?
If so, where would I find these? Any chance of these being online?
Thanks
RB
