And I'm looking into the marriage of Gwen Griffith to Edward Ellis, mariner, in Llanenddwyn by Banns on 08 April 1811. I'd like to know their ages and parents names, if possible. Any additional family connections would be helpful too.Maybe the same family as yours Richard. Ellis is my family line though.

Hi. Help please.
I'm looking for the marriage details for a John GRIFFITH(S).
All I know about his spouse is her forename which was Elizabeth (surname unknown).
I calculate that the ceremony took place between 1780 and 1801.
A daughter, Gainor, was born 1801 in Llanenddwyn.
Thanks in advance.

I was just in (email) touch with the Gwynedd Archives in Dolgellau, who pointed me to this developing website of Welsh historical newspapers which I thought I would share with you here (for those unaware of it):
Newsplan Cymru:
http://www.newsplanwales.info/s002.php
Their essay on "Newspaper Publishing in Wales" is also informative:
http://www.newsplanwales.info/s005.htm
I was inquiring in the hope that a local newspaper back home in Wales might have published an obituary of my ancestor who died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1863. But the archivist informed me that Dolgellau did not have a newspaper until 1868 and that in its early years this was a general rather than a local newspaper. The smaller towns around Dolgellau did not have newspapers at that time.
Every little bit helps enlighten!

Lizzie,
There are ways of finding death dates of Hugh and Louisa -- which I will try for you.
Currently 1930 is the most recent census available for viewing; national censuses
are every ten years -- The one for 1940 will be released in 2012.
I have access to old San Mateo and Burlingame directories which I will check next week; I'm not certain if there are directories readily available for the other towns/cities but will check.
Hopefully I can learn some of those answers.
Anna
Dear Anna B
Firstly I must apologise for my rudeness in not acknowledging your earlier
email kindly offering to do some "hunting". To be honest I wasn't sure
just
how "local" you were to San Mateo and wanted to get a few facts together
before I responded. So here we go............
On the ship's manifest Hugh Evans and Louisa Mary WILLIAMS indicated they
were going to their daughter, Mrs J. F. SPIERS (should be SPEIRS) at 1220
S.
Olive Street, Los Angeles. The mother, Louisa indicated she would be in
the
US for 6 months. Hugh indicated he would stay 3 months. Hugh's birthplace
is stated as Bontdder (should be Bontddu - the dd in Welsh is pronounced
"th" as in "their") so I am positive it is the right family.
I also suspect that the J.F. in their daughter's name were the husband's
initials as I think that was the correct form of address in those days, eg.
Mrs John ....
1930 San Mateo census
Living at A(?E)lm Avenue, (can't read town), San Mateo
The census record states (1) both age 50 and (2) came to America in 1912.
This differs from the S.S. Celtic passenger ship manifest which has them at
ages 52 and 50 in 1924. Their granddaughter, Jacqueline SPEIRS (age 5 born
Calif, NZ father, English mother) is staying with them. Hugh is listed as
working as a Packer.
Hugh was born about 1873 (Bontddu (later censuses in UK show Llanaber),
Wales) and Louisa about 1869 (Twyning, Glos, England)
Are there other US censuses that could be checked? I understand they were
taken every 5 years - is that correct?
So there are a few questions outstanding:
1. Did Hugh and Louisa come to US for a previous visit in 1912 or is that
an error? 1924 It seems they intended on coming over to US for the birth
of
their granddaughter (born May 1924) but at some stage became residents as
they appear in the 1930 census.
2. I haven't been able to trace Jacqueline's parents first names (and
without that knowledge can't get a birth certificate), nor have I any
information as to whether they appear in the 1930 census (not necessarily
living in San Mateo but I suspect still in California, perhaps LA). I
suppose its possible that Jacqueline's mother died in childbirth and her
grandparents ended up caring for her. Was that the reason they stayed
on???
3. According to the 1940 obituary for Hugh's mother (Barmouth, Wales),
Hugh
had already died. Is there anywhere to check for the deaths of Hugh Evans
WILLIAMS or Louisa Mary WILLIAMS? They don't seem to have died in Wales so
I must assume it was in California?
New links like these are always a challenge! If you have any other avenues
to suggest I follow, I'd be grateful to learn of them.
Again, apologies for my delay in responding.
Kind regards

migrants, I now also have a previously unknown family link with the SPEIRS

I am trying to help a friends father look into his family history but am finding it quite difficult. I am looking for details on Jennie Anderson, she gave birth to a Joseph Henry Anderson 26th Jan 1910 at 5 Glasforth terrace, barmouth. There are no details of the father the birth details simply give her occupation as a Domestic servant at the Taly-Don Hotel. Joseph was brought up by an Ann Jane Williams and was probably fostered though a church.
He later worked for a butcher called C.H.Rabbetts in Barmouth.
I don't really know where to look any more for details of Jennie or Joseph. A missing person advert was placed in a national sunday paper 1955-1960, for Jospeh, yet again I am not sure how I can follow this lead.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Much to my surprise and joy, today I discovered (through
www.ellisisland.org) the immigration record of my Great Uncle, Hugh Evans
WILLIAMS and his wife, Louisa Mary ! They emigrated from Barmouth in 1924,
leaving Liverpool on the ship "The Celtic", arriving in New York (28 Apr
1924) through Ellis Island, NY. Hugh was a book keeper then aged 52 (b 1873
Barmouth) and his wife 54 (b 1871 Warrington, Lancs), but they appear to
have emigrated without a family (did they have any or perhaps they went out
to join them??). Hugh was my grandfather's eldest brother.
Is there some kind person who might be able to check the 1930 US Census
record for me so that I might discover where Hugh was living and what his
occupation was then. A relative's funeral notice indicates Hugh had died by
1940), so if his death could be verified, I would be extremely grateful.
Thank you in advance

No wonder Shakespeare punned on Welsh rabbits/rarebit! I too have been drowning in HUMPHREYS, ROBERTS, DAVIES, etc., so much so that I have been focussing on the English branches of my ancestry. Knowing that someone else is looking at the same area and names encourages me to look again at the Welsh side of things.
I think that Llanwrin might be a good area to look for HUMPHREYS - I have a David HUMPHREYS who is shown living at 2 Blue Cottages, Ceuswyn, Merionethshire with his wife and family at the 1851 Census. He gives Llanwrin, Montgomeryshire as his place of birth.
Have you an offline email address - might make it easier for communication?

Hi Karen,
Thanks for all that info on ROBERTS and HUMPHREY. We may well be running into the same families in that area of Wales (around Dolgellau)--there are so many ROBERTS and HUMPRHEY(S) there. I was told to also consider searching in Montgomeryshire, as the confirming documentation for my own family that I was finding in Mallwyd, Merionethshire points to my family being right on the border between the two counties. I have not looked into the Montgomeryshire records yet.
The two birth certificates I ordered from the Gwynedd vital statistics office in Dolgellau were these, both in the Registration District of "Talyllyn" (covering births in the "Counties of Merioneth and Montgomery"):
No. 48, John ROBERTS (male), born 1837 December 8th, Lodge newydd, Arthog, Llangelynin, to parents Robert ROBERTS (occupation: Master Mariner) and Anne JONES. The informant was the mother, Ann JONES, Lodge newydd, Arthog, Llangelynin. Birth was registered 1837 December 22nd by registrar Hugh EVANS.
No. 210, Robert ROBERTS ("Boy"), born Fifth of September 1845 at Frondirion, Mallwyd to parents John ROBERTS (occupation: Farmer) and Catherine ROBERTS formerly HUGHES. The informant was the father, John ROBERTS, Frondirion, Mallwyd. Birth was registered Twentieth of September 1845 by registrar Hugh EVANS.
I was fishing for proof that these two boys, John and Robert ROBERTS, born in those years, were the sons in the family of parents DAVID and CATHARINE ROBERTS shown living on Waterloo Street in Dolgellau in the 1841 census-or even better, proof that their parents were my great-great-great-grandparents, DAVID ROBERTS and CATHARINE HUMPHREY(S). But I was disappointed on all counts.
I recently found definite proof of my ancestors' marriage (No. 117, DAVID ROBERTS and CATHARINE HUMPHREYS, 18 May 1827, in Mallwyd; Curate was Edward EVANS and witnesses were HUGH EVANS and Robert GRIFFITHS). Also found proof of their oldest child's baptism in the same place (No. 240, DAVID ROBERTS, 31 October 1827, with his father's occupation listed as "Skinner").
Looking backwards in the Mallwyd parish record book, based on cumulative evidence that led me to believe CATHARINE HUMPRHEY ROBERTS was born in 1806, I believe it is my ancestor "CATHARINE HUMPHREYS" I found baptized 16 November 1806, daughter of DAVID HUMPRHEYS, Clerk, and MARGARET his wife. An older sister, MARGARET, was baptized there 6 April 1804.
But I also found in the same parish book a DAVID HUMPRHEY son of DAVID HUMPRHEY by MARGARET his wife baptized 25 August 1782 and a JOHN HUMPRHEY son of a couple by the same names baptized 12 August 1792. As well as an EDWARD HUMPRHEY "son of Da'd Humphrey Joiner by Margaret his wife bapt'd" 7 August 1796 (I believe this was the "Edw'd Humphreys Infant buried" the following 24th of January).
I also found this marginalia: "David HUMPRHEY was made Clerk at Mallwyd Oct. 15, 1797" Was this the David HUMPRHEY "Joiner" or were there two David Humphreys (both with wives named Margaret??)in Mallwyd? And were these earlier births in the 1700s to the same parents as the parents of "my" Catharine born in 1806? It is a 14-year span from 1782 to 1806; it could conceivably be the same family.
Then: "David the son of David HUMPHREYS Joiner by Margaret his wife bap'd" Dec. 26, 1797.
Then "Rich'd the son of David HUMPHREYS Clark by Marg't his wife bap'd" Dec. 29, 1799.
Then "David HUMPHREY Infant buried" Feb. 19, 1800.
I am still trying to puzzle all of this out. How can a researcher be positive this is the right ancestor, when so many people in that area had the same names?
I did not find anything in the Mallwyd parish book that could possibly be the baptism of Catharine's husband, DAVID ROBERTS (b. c. 1806 as well). So, where did he come from before he was married in Mallwyd and said to have been from Mallwyd?
P.S. Catharine Humphrey and David Roberts' second son, Lewis, married a Margaret DAVIES (daughter of John) in Boston in 1851. I don't expect tracing that line to be any easier!
Too bad the Welsh didn't keep emigration records the way the Germans did!

Hello,
Has anyone got information on a Katherine Mary Daniels who married
the
Rev. Morris Owen Evans in the Bala area in the last quarter of Dec
1881? I am trying to find out who her parents were. She states on the
1901 census that she was born in Cefnddwysarn, near Bala, about 1857
but I cannot find a trace of her there, though there are a few
Daniels
around.
Thanks,
Gwyn Hughes

I do have a death date! Maggi, that is ingenious.
David Roberts (the father, formerly a skinner of Mallwyd circa 1827, born circa 1806, but I haven't found baptism info for him in Dolgellau or in Mallwyd) died in Boston, Massachusetts, on 28 November 1863. Sadly, his son, Dr. David Roberts (baptized in Mallwyd 1827) died a few months earlier in Boston on 15 August 1863. I don't yet know when or where Catharine Humphrey died. Is it possible to check the Dolgellau or Mallwyd newspapers for the latter half of 1863 to see if they mentioned the deaths of either father or son?

It was surprisingly common for families to travel to America and to come
back to Wales after. Have you tried looking for the family on later
census? If you can't find any of them I would say this strengthens the
case for it being 'your' family.
