Hi Listers,
From the DR Daniels book "Fy Mam" comes the following: My mother was eight
years old when they moved to Trawsgoed, the youngest of nine children. It
seems that her mother was an early member at the Independent chapel, Yr Hen
Gapel (the old chapel). She was christened by Rev. Michael Jones, the 1st,
and of course she was the only member of the family to be christened by him.
Most of the other 8 were christened by Llwyd y Plas... the Rev. Simon Lloyd,
B.A. and it is possible that Dr. Lewis Edwards christened one or two of
them.
I have found the christening record of Jane Roberts in the microfilmed
registers of Ebenezer Chapel in Llanuwchllyn. Can anyone tell me if Llwyd y
Plas is another chapel and if so where it is? I assume that Rev. Simon Lloyd
was the minister there. Has anyone heard of Dr. Lewis Edwards and where he
ministered?
Any information will be happily received!

Hi Ken
More help, thanks!
I've never come across anyone from Gorseinon (near Swansea, I think). This
was probably the great flu epidemic in 1919, which killed my mother's father
in January 1919 in Monmouthshire.
I do know there was a Mary Edwards, baptised 25th April 1813, and as they
often rounded the ages to the nearest 5, I believe, on the 1841 census, it
is quite possible that this is the Mary of the family as she doesn't show up
in the Llandderfel 1841 census, as far as I know. I don't know about the
John at the same address - I haven't got one on my list, and as the oldest
Edwards child was born in 1802, I think the mother, Anne, would probably
have been too old to have had a 15 year old in 1841 as she would have been
49 when he was born. I'll look up the Llanelltyd Bishop's Transcripts again
to have a look.
The other Edwards you mention could well be Rees Edward's brother, because
they are of an age. Rees was born either in 1772 or 1776, depending on the
census. I haven't heard of the farm you mention, but now I'll look to see
if there were any links.
Many thanks, once again.
Janet

Seeking marriage record ca 1798 or rector's list for a Rev. Thomas
EVANS, of the Episcopal Church of North Wales, possibly in Pennal
Parish, Machynlleth Parish, Tay l Llyn Parish, etc. to find wife's name?
Elizabeth EVANS, only child, was b. 20 June 1798 possibly in
Llanfihangel, Merionethshire, North Wales, married Rowland JONES and
immigrated before 1878 to USA with probably children Joseph B.,
Elizabeth, John R., Lewis, Rowland Thomas Jr., Edward E., Susan [Emma],
Mary, David, and Margaret JONES. Matilda JONES stayed in England.
THANKS :) in advance,

Hello Gwen,
The Old Ebenezar chapel in Llanuwchllyn is also called Capel Rhos y Fedwen
or Yr Hen Gapel.
The Gwynedd Family History Society have a booklet for the Memorial
Inscriptions of Capel Rhos y Fedwen,(C) Llanuwchllyn. The chapel is still
there with a small graveyard .
Regards ,
Elfed Owen.

Ken,
The amount of help you have been able to give me has been so valuable. Thank you yet again. Now I need to assimilate it and enter the information on my tree and spreadsheet and I'd better let my husband use the computer as he has been quite patient recently, as he does his own (English) family history, which is infinitely easier than our Welsh ones!
Why were so many Welsh people given the same names?
Janet
PS You don't happen to know as much about all my other Merionethshire family relatives, do you?

Hello Everyone,
I am new to this list and I have ancestors from the Merionethshire area and I have been lucky in the past as I have had quite a lot of information from a Gentleman from America but I am always looking for other people who are tracing the same family so we can share information.
I have a:
Williams Humphrey Williams Born Dec 1865 Harlech
his parents were:
Robert Jones Williams Born 1823 Llandanwg
Janet Williams Born 1829 Dolgellau
The parents of Robert were:
John Williams Born 1791 Trawsfynydd
Margaret Roberts Born abt 1787 Llandanwg
The parents of John were:
William Humphrey Bapt 1754 Llnfhngl Trth
Janet Williams Bapt 1757 Dolbenmaen
The parents of William Humphrey were:
Humphrey Cadwaladr Born abt 1724 Merioneth
Ellin Roberts Born abt 1730
they were married 1748 Llnfhngl Trth
I do have more information of the other ancestors family but I thought I just put a little bit first.
If anyone recognise these names I will love to hear from you.
Thank you very much.
Rhiannon
P.S.
The only certificates I have is of William Humphrey Williams, the dates I have is from the Gentleman in America and of the IGI site.
Thanks for that info, Ken.
I had searched for Rees on Ancestry, and hadn't found him in 1891, so this
is very helpful. I was about to look up Doreen's transcript now I knew
where he was living, so this has saved me another search. By going sideways
in the family, it often helps to get further back. It's a bit like doing a
big jigsaw, without the picture and half the pieces missing! As I have no
known living relatives from my Roberts/Edwards/Williams family, except for
one cousin who doesn't know any of this, I have to do a great deal of
educated guessing to fit things together. I was too young, and it was
wartime when all my elderly relatives were still alive, and nobody ever
seemed to mention ancestors then. I've had much the same problem with my
mother's family from Monmouthshire, and have just worked with a few faint
memories of names.
After a research visit to Newport later in May, I hope to fit in another
visit to Merionethshire to go to the Dolgelly records office. We made a
brief visit to North Wales two years ago but I now know far more details,
thanks to helpful people like yourself. I haven't been to Corwen since I

If you can fill in any more info re: Williams descendants, I should be most
grateful.
Once again, many thanks, and my thanks also go to Doreen & John again for
their help.

Ellis' daughter, Catherine, (Rees' older sister by 4 years) married Evan
Roberts from Llanfor/Llandderfel (b 1850). After some travelling around as
Evan was a sewing machine salesman, eventually the family settled in
Porth/Trealaw in the Rhondda, and stayed there. My grandfather was Robert
Meirion Roberts (b 1875/6) , their eldest child, and his brother was called
Ellis. There were two younger sisters, Catherine and Mary, although the
first baby had died at 14 weeks of age. When the Civic Centre was being
built in Cardiff in 1905, my grandfather, by then married, moved down to
work as a carpenter/joiner on the project, which is how my father and I were
both born and brought up in Cardiff.......
Strange world, isn't it?

Hi Listers,
Does anyone know if the monumental inscriptions for the old Ebenezer Chapel
in Llanuwchllyn have been transcribed? I have obtained a microfilmed copy of
the baptisms and have found some family references so I thought perhaps some
of the family members might have been buried there. Is the chapel still
there and is there a graveyard around it? Any information about this chapel
would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Gwen Cunningham

Hello David
Thank you for replying to my query.
There may be no connection with your family, but I'm prepared to research
any avenues. Maybe I'm just clutching at straws!
Doreen and John Jones from Canada, who have transcribed all the local
censuses on Genuki, left a message in 2003 for someone else researching
Williams in Llandderfel in 1851 on the RootsWeb site suggesting that there
might possibly be a family connection with Gist Faen because of the family
names. Whether this is actually true, I can't yet prove, as I need to find
baptisms from Llandderfel to check Ellis' parentage. I haven't found many
other Williams in the immediate area.
In 1851 Edward and Margaret Williams of Gist Faen are the correct age (60)
to be possible parents of Ellis and, as you will see, many of the family
first names, leading to Doreen Jones' suggestion, are the same. The other
pointer I have is that, in 1851, there is also a Jane Hughes aged 7 with
them at Gist Faen, and Hughes comes into my family as well, although there
is always the proviso that many names are very common.
In 1851, Ellis Williams (b 1812) was living at Maesod, quite close to Gist
Faen, with his wife, Catherine (b 1806 - nee Edwards) and their family.
At home were Margaret (b 1836), Elizabeth (b 1840), and Reese Edward (aged
10 days). Two younger children were "farmed out" to relatives - Hugh (b
1842) with his uncle Morgan Edwards at Henblas, and Catherine (my G
Grandmother (b 1847) with her grandparents, Rees and Anne Edwards at
Llanerch, presumably because of the new baby in the house. Another
daughter, Ann (b 1838), was at Garth Goch as a house servant with her aunt
Gwen Grestie/Cresty (nee Edwards) and husband John.
I'm very keen to find definite Williams parents and siblings linked with
Ellis (my G G Grandfather), so it would be fantastic if I could get back
further. I've come to another one of those proverbial brick walls.......
I don't know anything more about the Williams family before the 1841 census
when the 3 eldest children lived at Tynllechwedd, in Llandderfel. There
were two other Williams boys living there as well, Hugh (aged 10, b 1831)
and William (aged 15 b 1826). It is most unlikely that these are Ellis and
Catherine's sons. Catherine would have been old enough at 20 , but would
Ellis have had a son at 14? That seems unlikely!! I know Catherine's
birth/baptism from Bishop's Transcripts in Llanelltyd, Dolgelly, where she
was born, and Ellis' given year of birth matches with all the censuses. I
also have a copy of his death certificate in 1896 which bears this out.
Could any of this fit in with your family?
Hwyl i chi hefyd.
Janet

Annwyl Janet
I am still on the list!
I benefited greatly from Jeff Delves' contributions and, like many on
the list, from Doreen and John's hard work.
My grandmother was Mary Williams (1884-1966), daughter of Edward
Williams (1853-1923), Penrhyndeudraeth. He came from Llandderfel and
his dad was Evan Williams (circa 1827 to after 1881). His father was
Edward Williams (circa 1790 to ?) and that's as far back as I have
got. I think the family was at Cistfaen (Gistfaen) for many years
through the middle of the 19th century. I have a few records of who
Evan's other children were (Edward's siblings) but only a few hints
as to Evan's siblings. I can't see an Ellis among them so I am
intrigued as to what connection you have seen. I do hope there is
one! If there is a connection with Cistfaen then it seems very likely.
I have come across one other current-day Williams descendant. That
was from William Williams, Henfaes, Cynwyd. William was one of
Edward's brothers. (So he was my grandmother's uncle)
You did not give any dates.
I'd be glad to hear further on your Williams connections in the
Llandderfel area.

Janet,
It's a long shot, but I think that I have a connection by marriage to a
son of Ellis and Catherine Williams. Edward Rees Williams (a few weeks
old in 1851) married one of my grandmother's sisters, Elizabeth Davies
(born Corwen in 1861). He listed under the name Rees Williams in the
census for 1881, 1891 and 1901 as an Ostler living at Corwenna Terrace,
Corwen.
