Hello everyone,
especially to John R. Edwards, and Enid, who have recently joined in the
Edwards discussion.
Since I am having a problem going back in time from my G-Grandfather, John
C. EDWARDS, who was born in Llanuwchllyn in about 1836/7 I am wondering if
anyone may recognise his descendants. It seems an odd way to go about things
but I am quite stuck and grasping at straws really.
John EDWARDS married Margaret JONES
During the last few days I have been trawling the BMD and the only marriage
I can find for these names are in Bala - 1858.
I know that by 1862 John and Margaret were living in Liverpool and their
first of 9 children was born that year. They must have continued living in
Liverpool for a few more years before moving to Seacombe in the Wirral. Here is
a brief rundown of their appearance on the 1881 census (in Cheshire)
John EDWARDS Head 44 (born Llanuwchllyn) MER
Margaret EDWARDS wife 40 (born CAE)
Margaret E. EDWARDS daughter 18 born Liverpool
John W. EDWARDS son 16 born Liverpool
Mary C. EDWARDS daughter 13 born Liverpool
Robert EDWARDS son 11 born Seacombe, Cheshire
Llewellyn EDWARDS son 9 born Seacombe, Cheshire
Samuel EDWARDS son 7 born Seacombe, Cheshire
Ellis W. EDWARDS son 3 born Seacombe, Cheshire (My grandfather)
Winnefred EDWARDS daughter 1 born Seacombe, Cheshire
one more daughter was born in 1882:
Lillian EDWARDS
Perhaps if anyone recognises this family it may be a way for me to get back
to earlier generations. It's worth a try, anyway!
Thanks,
Judith
I will just have to wait, for 5 and 16 years, find a different direction or
hope for that on going campaign to work.
Thanks for the information,
Barbara

Unfortunately Census returns for England and Wales (I'm not sure what the

Good Afternoon,
I have another Census question.
What is the latest Census available to look at.
I am looking for Thomas H. Roberts born 1887 in Bala, Merionethshire.
His parents are Richard Roberts born Bala 1859 & Alice (No maiden name) born
1859 Gwyddelwern, Denbighshire
He is on the 1891 & 1901 Census reports.
I am wondering if anything like 1911 or 1921 is available. I know that
anything later than that would not be available due to the privacy of the
living. 1930 is the latest available in the US.
Any ideas are welcome & appreciated.
Thanks,
Barbara

Another question,
Has anyone in this group use manor or estate rolls in tracing the occupancy
of a particular place? I need to know on what estates certain farms etc.
were located and if the estate records still exist.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello List & BASIL WOLF.
You wrote: I have lately discovered an Ellis Vaughan, Brynllech d 1623 and

Interesting ! My ancestor Ellis ap John (d. 1663) lived/owned the farm Drws
caer gwenyn some 400 m to the west of Brynllech. Ref. the 1662-3 Hearth Tax
rolls.
The male lineages of Edwards, Vaughan, Lloyd and Ellis in this area of
Penllyn are
supposedly descendants of Rhirid Flaidd Lord of Penllyn. It is the male
descendants
that I would like to contact, in search of further proof (such as DNA
evidence) of this
lineage.
My line Gronwy ap Gruffydd b. c. 1330. His brother was Ieuan ap Gruffydd of
the Vaughan
and Edwards line, all of Llanuwchllyn Parish. Ref. Pedigrees of Peter
Bartrum and The
Visitations of Lewys Dwnn plus others.

Gwen,
Nant Gau is located either in Ucheldre or Garn Townships of Llanfor
Parish. My maps are not detailed enough to differentiate the finer
points of the township boundaries but I'm leaning to Garn.

Dear Listers,
Can someone tell me which township in the parish of Llanfawr/Llanfor the
place Nantgau is located. In the BTs for Llanfor during the time period
around 1740 the residence of the people is listed by the township they lived
in. The information I have from the D.R. Daniels book "Fy Mam" states that
the wife of the old Doctor Thomas Jones was from Nantgau. I recently found
that Nantgau is in Llanfor but if I can determine which township Nantgau is

Hi Gwen,
Your last email was confusing. Did you hit the reply button without editing
it ?because the message to Lloyd about Trawsgoed farm wasn't from me.
Judith
My thanks to all of you who responded to my query about Pentrevoelas and its
location. I need to get a map online for Denbigh and find it, which I shall
do now that it is the weekend!
Thanks again,
Gwen

LLoyd,
I have seen your emails to the list and I am interested in the EDWARDS name.
You are way ahead of me though as I'm afraid I can't even establish with
any certainty which Llanuwchllyn family my John EDWARDS was born into in 1836/7
!! So I can't offer to trade any information at the moment - perhaps one
day...........
Best Wishes,
Judith

Good Afternoon,
I have another Census question.
What is the latest Census available to look at.
I am looking for Thomas H. Roberts born 1887 in Bala, Merionethshire.
His parents are Richard Roberts born Bala 1859 & Alice (No maiden name) born 1859 Gwyddelwern, Denbighshire
He is on the 1891 & 1901 Census reports.
I am wondering if anything like 1911 or 1921 is available. I know that anything later than that would not be available due to the privacy of the living. 1930 is the latest available in the US.
Any ideas are welcome & appreciated.
Thanks,
Barbara

Barbara,
As given in your message, the birthdate of the older brother John is 32
years before Elinor's.
He would appear to have probably been born to a different mother or to
different parents altogether.

Dear Doreen,
I have seen your name so many times on the list helping people that I think of you as an old friend! Can I get in on your offer to Gwen, please? My ggrandfather Hugh Jones, son of Hugh (labourer, on son's marriage cert), born about 1844/45 in Pentrefoelas, Denbighshire. He is definitely in Liverpool in July 1880, on his marriage cert he is a mariner, on the 1881 census described as publican, later that year, on his son's birth cert., he is a mariner, again.
I hope that this is not too much of an imposition
Kind Regards
Fred Jones in sunny Johannesburg

Hello everyone,
I am still trying to find the parents of John Cadwalader Edwards. There are
2 families on the 1841 who have a John Edwards:-
1) John and Elizabeth Edwards at Castell Fron with son John aged 2yrs
2) Edward and Jane Edwards at Bryn Y Ffynnon, Penaran, with son John aged
4yrs
Someone kindly found John on the 1851:-
John Edwards 15yrs living at Weirglodd Wen (Wern?)
But which of the two 1841 families does he belong to?
I would appreciate some suggestions about how I can proceed as I just can't
think how to be sure which family John was with in 1841.
Thanks, Judith
Hi, Everyone,
Is there anyone who has any information about the local Churches in Bala?
The address I show for my Great Grandfather on the 1901 Census is
Bala Christ Church and Llanycil St Beuno, Bala, Merionethshire, Wales
I checked the Old Maps website and St. Beuno appeared to be on the coast of Lake Bala. I just checked a local directory and it appears that there are 2 different Churches. My Gr.Gr. Grandmother Margaret Roberts Phillips also used the residence as a Lodging house as did her son, my gr. Grandfather John William Phillips. It appears that this was the family home since 1796 or earlier
If anybody has any information, I would be so greatful!
Thank you,
Barbara
