Hello Dai,
Old Maps in operation today so I looked for Penybont fawr without success.
There is a Bont Cawr listed at the following coordinates: 281616,322346
To access this, go to www.old-maps.co.uk
In the top left hand corner is a search box. Enter 281616,322346 Click
on coordinate and then on search. Enlarge.
There are buildings in this vicinty that are not named on the map.
However, the 1851 census lists a Penybont cawr between Brithfryniau and
Esgeiriau Cawr.
That's as close as I can get.

Please can anyone tell me where Esgeriau, Brithdir Uchaf was and if it still exists. Some of my Evans ancestors lived there in 1841 & 1851 (when it was spelled Esgairia), neighbouring properties were Coedrhoslwyd, Llettyhen, LLwynffynnon & Prysglwyduchaf.

Hello Dai,
Go to this URL:
www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=280500&y=321500&z=3&sv=280500,321500&st=...
If this does not work, follow the A494 northeast from Dolgellau to
Rhydymain then look southeast of the village for Esgairiau on a
secondary road across the River Wnion.
I could not find Penybont fawr on my OS map and Old Maps was down so
I'll try tomorrow.

Hello Richard
I looked for you in the parishes that I have which includes Llanuwchllyn-
there was a Jane Pugh in the 1851-61 census for Corwen, born Gwyddelwern in
1808 but in 1851 she was married to a Richard Pugh, a harper from Dolgellau.
It doesn't fit? I couldn't find a match in 1841 either. So perhaps you need
someone with the Llanfachraeth censuses.

Hello Reimi,
I saw your mailing and have given it some thought.
I wonder if the eldest John Lewis aged 60 might have been a son of an Evan
Lewis, or perhaps an Lewis Evan maybe. The second son was called Evan which
gives rise to this question. Maybe then, hides the reason for the change in
surname later on from Lewis to Evans.
One branch of our family of Wynne in Llanbedr were once called Evans Wynne.
Then it came down to a Griffith Evans Wynne, and he decided to drop the Wynne
and stay with the Evans only surname. There is also an account in a book by
Dr. Lewis Lloyd called'Letters from America' that mentions an old Humphrey
Evans travelling overseas and wondered at him going to America because most of
his family were still in Wales. Now, I do know that this Humphrey Evans had
previously been Humphrey Evans Wynne.
I put this down to the reason as being, our Robert Wynne 1716-1761 gent,
married Margaret Evans of Blaiddbwll another small Estate in Llanbedr Parish.
For whatever reason though, people did change surnames sometimes. Women
though, in Wales, generally kept their maiden surnames even after marriage. The
reason being is that they would always be the daughter of so and so, say
Margaret Evan, but the surname of her husband was borrowed so to speak.
If you wish to come back on this one, please feel free. I am no expert, but
I do like to read and work some things out from different clues.
Best regards,
Cousin Maureen.

Hello Listers,
This is my first posting here but I've already found this forum extremely
valuable. In fact it's been the internet genealogy jackpot for me since I
found my cousin Maureen who's done a lot of research on my WYNNE line and
was able to connect me with close living relatives.
I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me with another line. I'd
appreciate any information or suggestions.
The 1841 Census for Llanddwywe is y Graig shows my family at Rowen as
follows:
John LEWIS, 60, M, Farmer
Jane LEWIS, 45, F
Lewis LEWIS, 20, M (my gg-grandfather)
Eleanor LEWIS, 15, F
Evan LEWIS, 13, M
Catherine LEWIS, 11, F
Mary LEWIS, 8, F
David LEWIS, 6, M
Thomas LEWIS, 2, M
Lewis EVANS, 60, M, Lodger
The 1851 Census for Rowen shows another son John and gives the added
information that Jane LEWIS was born in Llanenddwyn. By this time Jane was
a widow and on this return and all future records Lewis LEWIS appears as
Lewis EVANS while the rest of the family is still called LEWIS.
I would like to know why he might have used the last name EVANS. I would
also like to know anything about his parents and siblings. The only sibling
I've been able to trace forward is Mary.
I found this record in the marriage bonds index that looks like a good match
but I don't have any evidence yet:
LEWIS, John, bach., Llanddwywe, MER. 1817, Nov 28. At Ll. Jane THOMAS.
A,B. 50/108.
Thanks for your help,
Reimi Evans

Hi,
Has any researcher done a reading of the Corris Cemetery where Rowland JONES, James JONES and Robert JONES are buried? I have photos of their headstones:
Rowland JONES, is in the center, died at either 51 or 31 years of age, Robert JONES died in 1895 on the 10th day of ? which is near the iron 1/2 fence.
Or is there some kind soul who could look at the headstones for me? Thank you. Jan <jnrose(a)webtv.net>
I would like to email the record office that holds the non-conformist
church records for Blaenau Ffestiniog. Could someone please tell me
their email address? Do they do look-ups in the church records via
emails?
Thank you for your help.

Maureen,
I think you meant this e-mail for Leslie. I am enjoying these e-mail exchanges, however, concerning Llanenddwyn and Llanddwywe, as there doesn't seem to be very many from this area on this list. None of the names or dwellings you listed seem to connect with my families so far.
If either of you visit your ancestors in the cemeteries in these areas, and have LOTS of extra time, and come across any of my family names on the tombstones, would you mind copying down the information for me?
I could send you surnames and dates off-list if this is ever a possibility.
Thanks so much.

Hello Kay,
I found your email so interesting that I am going to keep itsafe. I did not
know that Duffryn was once called Duffryn by sea.
I can name some of the farms connected to my family, and see if you
recognize them.
On the Gorsygedol Estate, but since 1909 owned by a cousin and descendants.
Meifod Uchaf. Meiford Isaf also by other cousins. All surnamed Wynne. In
Llanenddwyn, there was Gornant Isaf owned by my Roberts side. i.e. Wynne
married Roberts. But the original Roberts i.e. Griffith Roberts came from
Llanddwywe. Oops! Margaret Richard I should have said, and I have traced that line
back to a marriage in 1712. Moving on then. Ty Mawr in Llanenddwyn was
tenanted by my Wynne side. Then Tyddyn Bach by Margaret Richard, daughter of
Richard John. Of course. She married my William Wynne. b.1827. They were the
ones who first went to Meifod Uchaf.
Sorry that I cannot help with Mitchelmore though, the only one I can recall
knowing by that name was Cliff Mitchelmore or television fame. Hmm! Perhaps
he might one day be the subject of 'Who do you think you are?' I hope so for
your sake.
Back down the line, I had Pughs living at Bronyfoel Isaf, and Ganol. And
they are buried in Llanenddwyn in a pretty large box tomb. I made a mistake
before. It is this line that I have traced back to the marriage in 1712. I
was chasing up the original names which came down in family, i.e. Hugh
Pritchard. The name Hugh has spread out into several different lines in the present
and future generations, and I wanted to know how it started. So, I found an
Elena Hugh marrying Richard ap Hugh in 1712. Now I d do hope I have got that
right from memory. Anyway, most of these surnames came together under Wynne
later on. And this was my maiden name. I had a Robert Wynne working at
Gorsygedol as a butler in the late 18th centuary. I believe he is buried in
Llanddwywe, but I could not catch up with him.
This Wynne family lead back to Llanbedr Parish, to a small estate called
Cefn Cymera. But, I am descended from the second son, so he did not inherit the
estate. But, I do know that descendants of the eldest son were responsible
for the building of Salem Chapel in Llanbedr.
OK! Enough for now? Or I can go on forever.<grin>.
Good to hear from you.
Maureen

Hi Alwyn
Back in August you wrote to the list mentioning "William Williams o'r Wern".
Do you happen to know if there is a connection between this William Williams and a Lowry(Laura) William (daughter of William David & Lowry Tudor) born September 1838 (baptized September 9, 1838, Trawsfynydd - (residence listed as Wern Cyfrdwy). I believe William David's parents were David William & Lowry (?)
Lowry William married Morris Price (b1830 - Llanfihangel Y Traethau) in Trawsfynydd in 1863. Her marriage certificate states that she was living at Wern, Trawsfynydd, at the time of her marriage. She had a brother William Davies who married a Ruth Morris in 1873.

Yet another Jones trail, I'm afraid!
My family lived at Dugoed Isaf farm in Mallwyd until the death of Robert Jones in 1876. My great- grandmother Jane (his daughter) had already moved to England but her brothers David, Robert,Hugh and Evan seem to have completely disappeared. I was wondering if any of their descendants were trying to link up.
As I'm not a Welsh speaker I don't know how to go about tracing Robert and his wife Elizabeth's ancestors. I do know they belonged to the Ebenezer chapel in Dinas Mawddwy.
Many thanks for any advice
