Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

There's a survey linked from the home page which I hope you will take the
time to answer.

If you could see birth, marriage and deaths certificates on-line, would you
prefer to see the original register entries held by the local register
offices, or the secondary copy held by the GRO?
It also asks about volunteering to copy the certificates held in local

Message Board Post:
I too am researching the Nanney/ Anway families. I have a Robert Nanney coming from Wales on the ship Increase in 1632 landing in Dover, Maryland? Then marries Kathryn Wheelwright (father Rev. John) they live in Boston, Mass. until his death in 1663. In will he says that he has a son Samuel and daughter Mary, and one unborn child (eventually that is Tabitha, who dies as a child) Samuel eventually becomes a merchant? with business in Bermuda where he dies in 1690 quoted as "a single person" , but I don't know if it met unmarried or as a single v. muliple death.
The next Nanney that is linked with our family is William Nanney b. 1720? in or near New York or in Wales. Don't know for sure. He has at least 2 sons, George and David.and one daughter Amy. George is our lineage. He moves to Seneca Co. New York, then to Deleware Co. Ohio. He has several children -William (our lineage) who married Hannah Hall. Eventually, they change their name to Anway. Reason unknown but his brother David did not change name. I figure the change took place about 1811 when they left NewYork for Ohio. All of George's family change their names. A grandson of David changes his name too. Also to Anway. I was wondering if you have info on Samuel was he married? Did he have children? Or about William his parents, birth place and date.? thanks !!!!
Hello Listers,
I have recently obtained the marriage record for Morris Owen Evans and his
wife Katherine Mary Daniels. They were married on 1 December 1881 in the
Calvinistic Methodist Chapel in Bala. His father was Owen Evans and her
father was Robert Daniels. The 1881 census for Morris O. Evans said that he
was born in Festiniog, Merionethshire so here I am! A kind soul on the
Caernarfon list found Morris as a child living with his father Owen Evans in
the 1871 and 1861 censuses in Festiniog. Is there anyone on the list who
might have the 1851 census with the father Owen Evans on it? The 1861 census
lists him as 51 years old living with his wife Jane age 45. The children
Evan 19, Grace 17, Margaret 15, Hugh 11, Owen 8, William 6, and Morris 3
appear also. Any information that anyone has about these people would be
very gratefully received.
Thanks,
Gwen Cunningham

Thank you so much! I have been puzzling over this for a while because no one
to whom I have mentioned Celynnin knows of its existence except you. I thought
that when my gg grandfather gave Celynnin as the place of his residence to
the registrar, he was giving the town of his residence. Except for the state of
Louisiana, we in the U.S. aren't used to the concept of parishes as places
where we live.
Thanks again!

Dear Alwyn:
The email above that you sent someone else prompted me to write you to ask
what placename I should look for if I were to check a similar question with the
National Library of Wales. You advised me as follows with regard to the place
my gg grandfather was living at the time of his marriage:
"I can tell you where Celynnin is. It is the parish centred on Llangelynin
between Tywyn and Dolgellau in Merionethshire. Celynnin falls within the
registration distict of Dolgellau (known as Dolgelly or Dolgelley in 1853), . . . "
Celynnin does not seem to exist nowadays. What placename should I look for
when I want to look for Celynnin?
Thanks.

I may be, because the names Samuel and Humphrey are common names in both my maternal and paternal families that hail from the Llangelynin area, however this is not where my family name of Humphreys comes from - that is from a Trawsfynydd family in the opposite end of the county, and has only been used by my family as a surname for five generations (since about 1831).
The parish records for Llangelynin only go back to 1677, which is unfortunately just a touch short of what would be useful for your research.
Have you checked with The National Library of Wales, e mail
holi(a)llgc.org.uk
to see if they have any pedigrees or wills in their collection relating to the Llwyn Du families?

Alwyn, are you descended from the Humphrey's of Llangellynin (Owen, Samuel, Richard)? Dr. Donnell MacClure Owings believed that Capt. Richard Owen/Owings (abt. 1662-1716) was a son of Owen Humhrey of Llwyn du. This was a theory and never been proven. Richard Owen signed several Welsh Quaker Certificates of Removal before coming to William Penn's Welsh Tract in Pennsylvania about 1683. I have had my Y DNA test completed from Family Tree and would like to prove or disprove this link with the Humphrey family. Owen's brother Samuel is the great great grandfather of Joshua Humphrey "Father of the United States Navy".

Karen, I wonder if you have tried other variations on the mother's name? The
surname Stanley certainly has more possibilities of being found than
Williams. Jeannie could be Jane or Jennie or Jenny or Jennifer or even
(though less likely as an official name in that period) Sian. What about
variant spellings of the surname Stanley even? Stanlie, Stanely, Stantley
... Worth trying?

Hello List,
I am relatively new to this list & I am hoping that SKS can point me in the right direction with my brick wall even though my query might not relate to the Merionethshire area.
I am searching for Robert Griffith Williams & his parents Griffith Williams & Jeannie Williams nee Stanley. According to his death certificate here in Australia he was born in 1874 in Wales. His arrival in Australia has him as being born in 1875 in Wales. So unfortunately I don't have a precise date of birth or an exact location of birth & with such a common name as Robert Williams I'm at my wits end of what to try next.
I have searched the LDS website & FreeBMD & I have also looked at Ancestry Co Uk but have found no marriage between Griffith Williams & Jeannie Stanley. I thought I had found them just recently through this list with a marriage between Griffith Williams & Jeanette Williams nee Williams in 1874 Llandanwg Merioneth but because Jeannette's maiden name is not Stanley I feel that this is not the right couple.
Robert left Wales (I don't know when) & spent 10yrs perhaps 20 yrs in South Africa before arriving in Australia in 1924. He only had 2 yrs here before he died. I have tried searching in South Africa but with no success at all. So I'm trying to find him in Wales & looking at all the counties with such a common name will be no small feat. So any thoughts from this list would be very much appreciated.
I thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail & look forward to hearing any suggestions that this list might have.
Cheers
Karen McCarthy
