Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi List
Does anyone have access to the parish records for Bettws Gwerfil Goch?
I just received a marriage certificate for
Evan Price and Catherine Jones - June 4, 1887.
Unfortunately it only gives the father's name for Catherine Jones and
he is deceased. Her father was listed as Thomas Jones, farmer.
After her marriage Catherine gives her birth place as Gwyddelwern, but
the only match I can find prior to that, with a father Thomas, is one
born in Llanfihangel GM. I have been unable to determine if I have
the correct family.
I was wondering if someone could look up the parish entry for me to
see if the mother is mentioned .

Hello Trevor
I can't promise anything, but I do have a very lovely cousin(a Roberts from Chirk) who lives down that way. He just happens to be married to a Registrar!!!!

I'm researching the family of Albert & Louisa Jane OSBORNE, of Stewart

domiciles 1901-1918, via Electoral Registers/Trade Directories and it's
not easy from here, "oop North" in York. As Albert was a postman/letter
carrier, I'm worried that he may have moved frequently.
Just to make matters worse, I would dearly like a copy of the,
largest-scale possible, map of Moordown/Winton, HAM, OS Series 2. Reason

It goes without saying that I will happily meet the reimbursement of all

I don''t know whether this is any help. I don't know whether you received a
reply to your query but I kept your posting as the name rang a bell. Today I
met the lady whose family lived at a farm - Tyn ddol, Tanygrisiau, in the
parish of Ffestiniog, and whose sister still lives there. They have lived
there as far as I can understand for over 100 years; the surname being
Evans. She did not know of any other place with the name Tyn Ddol Hen in the
area. Again I believe that they have the deeds to the house that I presume
would give more information. Much of the land at one time was taken over by
the council to build a road, reroute the river bed and to dump slate waste.
I don't know whether this is the your place but I could put you in touch
with the above if you wished.

Thanks Joan,
I already know the difference but was suggesting that a posting, similar
to this article, could be posted occasionally on the message boards to
help beginners.
Boards like RootsChat have the ability to create 'sticky' messages which
always appear at the top of the list (but I don't think that this can be
done on RootsWeb).

The enumerator's Walk in 1871 was like this:
South Street / Cwrt Uchaf / JAMES COURT / Wesley House /
Wesley Place / Wesley Square / South Street / Meyrick Square
Which suggests that James Court is a spur of South Street near the old
chapel in Pen ucha'r dre.
All the best

Yes, you're correct. A misplaced digit, and my apologies for the slip.
By the way, any idea where James's Court might be? My guess is Pen
Ucha'r Dre' near the 'old chapel.'

This blurb cannot be customized. The purpose of the blurb is to alert board
posters that their post will be copied from its original location on the
board to a corresponding mailing list.
Knowing this is really all a board poster should need to know--because the
list members are then responsible for replying in a manner that the board
poster will see--either on the board itself or copying them by email in their
reply. Granted that doesn't always happen--but the burden of getting the reply
to the intended recipient is on the list member and not the board poster.

Ian-
It can't directly under the current board system--a message can be placed on
the Links & Announcements page of the boards, but few users click through
and read that page.
However, the primary responsibility of knowing that gatewayed messages must
be replied to by clicking on the link and replying on the board, or as an
alternative, including the board poster as a cc in your reply to the
list--mainly falls on the list subscribers. So a message on the L&A page of the board
wouldn't reach the list subscribers anyway.
I better alternative might be to include a rotating tagline on list messages
that remind the list members of the proper method of replying to gatewayed
post--but that is up to the list admin, Alwyn, and not me. Plus--it isn't
perfect--people still forget. :)

Making Most of Message Boards and Mailing Lists
Mailing lists and message boards are two of the resources at RootsWeb
that most researchers use. They offer incredible opportunities for
beginning researchers as well as the veteran family historians.
The index of all of the 27,800+ RootsWeb mailing lists is here
http://lists.rootsweb.com/
and you can find the more than 140,650 message boards from here:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/
So why both lists and boards? While there are many similarities, there
are differences and occasions when one or both will best suit your
research needs. Both mailing lists and message boards can be found for a
vast array of surnames, localities, and topics and are completely free
to use. Each forum provides an opportunity to post a query or data to
learn or share information, make contact with fellow researchers, or
help others by making data publicly available to all. Both offer
browsing and searching of posted messages.
Mailing lists are an e-mail forum for discussion among a group of
researchers who subscribe to a list. Some list subscribers have
e-mail capabilities, but not Web access. Those on a mailing list receive
all messages posted to a list by others. The fact that you must
subscribe to (join) a list in order to post or receive messages from it
encourages serious researchers and makes them relatively immune to spam
and other undesirable content.
On the other hand, Message boards require Web access in order to search,
browse, or post a message. Also, anyone can post on a message board
whether he is a serious researcher writing about an ancestral line or
someone with only a passing interest in the subject. Data such as wills,
deeds, obituaries, or biographical information can be recorded by
anyone -- regardless of whether they have any connection to, or interest
in, the individuals about whom they are posting.
Messages found on all message boards and most mailing lists are
searchable, but a major difference between the two is that the boards
are searchable on a global basis while list archives are searchable on a
list by list and year-by-year basis. Both archives are browseable
on an individual basis. Anyone can search or browse boards and lists.
Mailing lists function more "in the moment" than message boards do. The
"real-time" discussion on a list often includes queries and responses on
a specific thread until all aspects of the initial query have been
thoroughly answered or covered.
Message boards operate more as a repository so that future visitors may
respond -- weeks, months, or even years later. Boards are a great place
to archive data. Additionally, the boards have a wider audience due to
their searchability through RootsWeb or Ancestry's interface, meaning a
greater number of researchers will probably see your message on a board
than on a list. However, most "experts" or "locals" are subscribed to
the lists in their areas of major research or geographic area. Not all
mailing list subscribers check message boards.
One valuable tool to aid mailing list subscribers in viewing message
board posts is the "gateway," which makes board posts available on a
corresponding list with a link to permit replying on the board. The
boards that makes use of the gateway option carry a yellow highlighted
notation to that effect as well as a yellow envelope icon.
For many lists and boards gatewaying provides the best of both worlds by
playing to the strengths of both the message board and mailing list
forums. Utilize both lists and boards to get the max out of your
researches. And, don't just post once and wait for answers. Remember to
give help as well as ask for it -- that's what these forums are all
about.
Alwyn,

Hello Alwyn,
Unlike Jill, I have no known objections to the link. In fact, I have
sometimes been pleased to follow up on a message because it has triggered me off on
perhaps some half forgotten point I wanted to renew, but that trigger has
renewed my interest. With so many family lines I have followed up over the
years, doubling up with each generation, some lines have to take a back burner
whilst the present one is occupying my thoughts.
So, really it is down to you to make the choice.
Best regards, and the compliments of the season.

Messages to the board are sent, by default, to the WLS-MERIOINETHSHIRE Rootsweb mailing list via a "gateway".
Unfortunately messages are not returned from the list to the board. So a reply might be given to a message on the list to a board posted message, but the board poster will be none the wiser about the "sweat and guts" put into replying to some of their postings by list members.
If a board user has not received a reply, can I kindly suggest that they check the list archives at

The decision to link board and list is a mutual one agreed between myself, the list administrator and Joan Young, the board administrator.
How do regular board users and list members, feel about continuing the board – list link?
Should the link remain, or should it be switched off?
