I wonder if anyone has access to the 1841 census for Harlech. I'm looking for an Evan James Davies, Schoolmaster who would have been about 64.

Can anyone help me. I am looking for the names of any local newspapes in circilation in the mid to late 1940's in the Bala area. thanks a lot margaret
Elfed,
Many thanks for your recent e-mail re "HUMPHREYS of Llandrillo" sent to me directly - I don't have your e-mail address, so my reply via rootsweb.
1) Why was Richard, son of David & Elizabeth HUMPHREYS of Pen y Geulan, apparently baptised in both Llandrillo & Llangar churches in April 1820? My reply can only be guesswork. This was before civil registration of births started in 1837; the farm was essentially on the boundary between the 2 parishes; there were certain advantages in ensuring that a child was baptised - essentially the only means of officially registering the birth, both in terms of time (for later claims regarding one's age) and place (in terms of parish support?). A 'border case' might suggest baptising the child in both parishes, 'just to make sure' that there would be no problems. Where did the mother, Elizabeth (ROBERTS), come from, & where were David & Elizabeth married? - I haven't been able to find their marriage in the Gwynedd FHS Index of Merionethshire marriages. None of this explains why of the 6 children of David & Elizabeth baptised at Llangar, Richard was the only one also baptised at Llandr!
illo.
2) Was a Thomas HUMPHREYS, son of Humphrey CADWALADER & Jane DAVIES of Blaengwnodl, baptised at Llandrillo c1772-1790? Clwyd FHS have published transcriptions of Llandrillo church records, including baptisms 1761-1812. These include -
i) 18 July 1784 - Thomas HUMPHREYS, son of Evan & Elizabeth.
ii) 27 November 1811 (born on 21st) - Robt HUMPHREY [sic], son of Thomas & Eliz'th of Blaen y Cwm.
Llandrillo Church Burials 1813-1836 shown Evan HUMPHREY buried 24 March 1817 age 81, ie born c1736.
[Thomas HUMPHREYS of Llanfawr married Elizabeth ROBERTS of Llandrillo at Llandrillo church 25 February 1811. I think that Thomas was referred to as being 'of Llanfawr' simply because he was working there at the time, rather than having been born there.Maybe.]
I really do not think that this branch of the HUMPHREYS family is closely linked (if at all) to the Pen y Geulan/Blaen Gwnodl HUMPHREYS family : the latter seem to have derived their surname as a patronymic from Humphrey CADWALADER in the late 1700s, while the Llandrillo branch were HUMPHREY(S) from the early 1700s.
3) Who was Elizabeth HUMPHREYS of Cross Foxes, Llandrillo, buried 1 May 1906 age 80 - ie born c1826? [This links to your e-mail of 30th March, noting that 'Barbara HUMPHREYS (who died in 1965) was a descendant of Thomas HUMPHREYS, born c1786, & his wife Elizabeth ROBERTS.']
i) "Llandrillo MIs", published by Clwyd FHS, shows : F72 : "Er serchog gof am Barbara HUMPHREYS, Hendra Arddwyfaen, Llangwm, hunodd Tachwedd 17 1965 yn 79 mlwydd oed." [More details from obituary/death notice in Cyfnod or other local newspaper?]
ii) The Llandrillo School Admissions Register 1864-1900 shows Barbara HUMPHREYS, dob 5.3.1887, daughter of William HUMPHREYS of TynyGraig.
iii) Robert HUMPHREY(S) (born 1811, died January 1873) married in May 1849 at Llandrillo church Elizabeth JONES, daughter of William JONES. This is the Elizabeth who finally died at Cross Foxes in 1906. Elizabeth & Robert had children -
a) Elizabeth, bapt Sept 1850, married 1st Mr OWEN, 2nd in June 1887 Matthew MORRIS;
b) William, born Llandrillo c1853, married Margaret (born c1856 Llanuwchllyn/Trawsfynydd), they had 6 children -
1. Elizabeth, born 13 November 1879 Trawsfynydd;
2. John, born 7 January 1882 Llandrillo - shown as 'nephew' with Matthew & Elizabeth MORRIS at Cross Foxes in 1891 census;
3. Robert W, born 16 February 1884 Llandrillo,died 1891;
4. Barbara, born 5 March 1887 Llandrillo - did not marry;
5. Margaret Ellen, born 25 March 1888 Llandrillo;
6. Robert W, born & died 1891.
c) Margaret, bapt Llandrillo October 1856, married May 1893 John JONES; in 1901 census Elizabeth HUMPHREYS is shown as mother in law living at Tan y Fedw with Margaret & John, age 79 (ie born c1822).
Hope this helps!!
Best Wishes,
Jeff Delves

Hi,
I have connections with pwllheli lifeboat and am awaiting possible further info for you.
As a child I used to love playing in the life-boat shed and remember there were lots of names and dates on the walls.
I have a picture of mr Jones with the crew, and another picture of his lifeboat.
Can you e-mail me at gwiddondewin(a)aol.com and I will scan them to you.
I had the same problem. If I remember correctly I was told to do the
following.
Go to Tools, Options, Security then unclick "do not save or allow
attachments to be opened that could potentially be a virus." Click ok and
that should solve the problem.
If you have a good anti virus you shouldn't have problems with virused
attachments.
Hope that solves it for you.

This may be a stupid comment but if you've looked at the PR for Llanfair at
Caernarfon, are you sure you were looking at the right Llanfair (ie
Llanfair-juxta-Harlech) in Meirionnydd, whose records are kept at Dolgellau
and the National Library? There is also Llanfair-is-gaer and Llanfairfechan
in Caernarfonshire. Just a thought.

I am struggling with my William Jones.
According to an IGI record, he was born 1811 in Llanfair Merioneth - spouse Eleanor. This part is correct, his first wife was Eleanor Roberts and his second wife was Catherine Roberts , Eleanor's sister.
However, I have searched the PR's for Llanfair at Caernarfon and haven't had any success.
I have William Jones at all the census records from 1841.
In 1851 he was down as born Llanfair, 1861 b. Nefyn but then 1871 again shows Merioneth and the 1881 shows llanfair.
His father was John Williams a Blacksmith.
Any thoughts, advice, comments would be much appreciated as I plan to pay a visit to North Wales either next month or November and would like to find some details on William and of course his father.

Geraint,
Just a thought, I wonder if you are experiencing a patronymic problem. I
recall our web master, Alwyn, mentioning the probable periods of change
in the system of recording baptisms in Merioneth but couldn't find it
when I searched. Another suggestion is to search for William Jones in
parishes adjacent to Llanfair.
I am experiencing the same problem regarding differences in place of
birth between the censuses with my great , great grandmother.

Speaking as one who has been helped enormously by both yourself and Doreen &
John in Canada in the past may I make a suggestion in relation to your query
below?
Gareth Hicks (gareth(a)tytwp.demon.co.uk) has been updating the Merioneth
pages on GENUKI (though he is not a subscriber to this list). I understand
that Alwyn ap Huw and Doreen & John have been supplying Gareth generously
with material they have transcribed for him then to make it available
through this most central of British genealogical sources on the www.
I wonder whether you could do the same (I assume that you have made and
retained electronic versions of your transcriptions). My understanding is
that there is no copyright problem on census material.

Dear Jeff,
"Did I mis-transcribe his age?" Not necessarily at all.
In the 1841 census for Llandrillo (Garthiaen), Mary DAVIES is living at
Cadwst. Her 7 year-old son, Robert SMITH, is resident at a neigbouring
farm, 'living on his own means'. RS was her illegitimate son (by a
William SMITH); I am of the opinion that Robert was boarded out by his
maternal grandfather, so that Mary could find a man. It worked - she
married my 2xgt. g/father, John JONES, on 24 Dec 1844, and RS was
brought into the newly-marrieds' household.
Cheers,
Trevor
Doreen & John,
I was most interested to see that you are transcribing the 1891 census of Llandrillo - I have in recent years transcribed all the Llandrillo censuses, also many of the Llandrillo church etc records, & have deposited indexed copies of a number of these transcriptions at the Dolgellau Records Office. I wonder if Alwyn might have any suggestions as to how these transcriptions might be made more readily accessible over the internet (might there be a copyright problem?).
Regarding the 1891 Llandrillo census, according to my notes -
1) I have - Kate WILLIAMS, born McCullum's Creek, Victoria - with the word "Australia" added in a different hand.
2) The EVANS family of Bronllan - head of house widower Ellis, with children Ellis, Elizabeth & Thomas; 5th member of the household is 10 year old Gomer, nephew; the surnames of the 3 children are shown as "do", ie "ditto", referring father Ellis EVANS. There is no such "do" for Gomer - I assumed that he too is an EVANS. In fact this is confirmed by Gomer's entries in the School Admissions Register 1864-1900.
3) At Lletty - I cannot really explain how, in addition to the EVANS family (mother, father, 4 children) we also have 2 year old Robert Price JONES as a boarder "living on his own means". Did I mis-transcribe his age?
4) At Berwyn House - the head of the household was my grandfather, 47 year old John ROBERTS, widower, Post Master & Shoe Maker, with 5 children -
John O ROBERTS, age 20, C Methodist student : died of TB 1896, buried in Llandrillo churchyard with his mother Catherine, who died of TB in 1885.
Serfiah ROBERTS, age 18, house keeper : married E H WILLIAMS - together they ran "The Stores" in Llandrillo for many years.
Evan ROBERTS, age 16, apprentice : ran "Bronceidiog" shop (now 'Berwyn' restaurant next to the bridge) for many years; 5 daughters.
Margaret E ROBERTS, age 15, general servant : married Thomas Richard JONES of Llandudno.
Llywelyn ROBERTS, age 12, scholar : 'Llew' married Alice, emigrated to Australia (Melbourne), had 4 sons (including Aneurin Owain & John Elias),
possibly a grandson named Lloyd George ROBERTS; I would very much like to contact Llew's descendants.
John ROBERTS, my grandfather, married my grandmother, Gwenllian HUMPHREYS (nee DAVIES, born Llanddeusant, Carmarthenshire) at Barmouth in 1898. Gwenllian's first marriage was in 1887 at Bontddu to William HUMPHREYS (c1851-1890); at the time of her marriage to JR she was running the Idris Temperance Hotel in Barmouth. My mother, Eluned ROBERTS, was born at Berwyn House, Llandrillo, in 1902. John ROBERTS died, age 69, on my mother's 9th birthday in 1911.
I'm afraid that I have rather wandered away from the original topic!
Best wishes,
Jeff Delves

Hi,
I wonder whether a kind person would do the following look-up for me in the Llanycil census:
Robert Ellis, aged 42, born in Dolgellau. Wife's name unknown. His children were Janet Ellis, aged 12, born in Llangollen and John and William Ellis, both aged 2 and born in Bala/Llanycil. They may have been living at Bryncaled Alley, Llanycil.
Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks, Lowri.
