Hi John & Doreen
Thank you for the information... it look's as if
I am on the right road, Morris Morris being a slate Quarryman was a surprise
as he has been a farmer in the 1851 & 1861 and up to Dec1887 when he died,
there are many Quarry's in the area for me to research......that will be my
next goal.
I do see Eric Jones from time to time and I will pass on your regards, let
me know when you are in the area..... we could try and meet up.
Thanks again.....much appreciated
Regards
Helen.

Hello List
Looking to see if you can help when I come up to North Wales in Sept, I am look to find some where to see the 1891 and 1901 Census for Blaenau Ffestiniog and will be staying in Dolgellau. Also is the church of St David still in Ffestinog as I have a marriage Cert from there and the Bride Residence at the time of Marriage was Dolrhedyn and the Groom Residence at the time of Marriage Dolgaregddu the family names are Williams and Thomas.
Hope Some one can Help
Ivor
Hello List!
This is David Evan Roberts, Nottingham area.
Further to my recent listing I would like to add some information on Robert Roberts (1843 - 1891).
He was the son of Robert Roberts(1809 - 1889) and Catherine Edwards (1811 - 1903) of Llanwuchllyn.
He is mentioned on the tombstone of his father in the churchyard in Llanwuchllyn but died in St Catharine's, Ontario, Canada.
He is buried in the Masonic area of the St Catharine's Cemetery. The Cemetery superintendent kindly sent me a photo of the gravestone. It appears he is buried with Lucretia Washburn (born in Canada) the wife of Asahel Roberts. My guess is that Asahel emigrated from Wales and Robert - perhaps his nephew - followed later. Robert was a marine engineer. Could he have learned his trade on Lake Bala? I know nothing about the marine activity on Lake Bala in the 1800s. Perhaps someone on the list does?
Any ideas most welcome.
David Evan Roberts
To the Merionethshire List and to Alwyn ap Huw:
As I wrote to the list in July, I am searching for the parents of my
great-great-grandfather, William Jones, born in Doggedly on 20 September
1792. William was a well-to-do solicitor in London, as well as owning
Glandwr Hall near Dolgelly. My grandfather, William Henry Wescomb Jones,
came to America in 1894, along with two of his seven brothers. Their
father, second son of William Jones was John Cartwright Jones, an Anglican
rector who died of TB at age 45, leaving 9 children and his widow Mary
White.
Alwyn has been kind enough to locate the baptism of a William, son of John
Griffith and Elinor his wife, on 23 Sept. 1792. This may, or may not, be
the parents of my William. I know that William had a sister, Elizabeth, who
married a Griffith. She is named as deceased in his will in 1882. Her two
daughters, Sarah and Catherine Harriet Griffith are also named in the will.
They also appear in his household, as unmarried, in the 1871 census.
Now, it seems that I need to pin down the parentage of William by trying to
find the birth of an Elizabeth, daughter of a John Griffith and Elinor.
This might help. Would you be able to check this for me, Alwyn? And could
you tell me in what records you found the baptism for William? Was it in
the church records at the Dolgelly Archives or from Bishop's Transcript
microfilm?
Can anyone advise me on the best way to try to trace a Welsh family back
further in the 1700s using the Welsh naming practices? For instance, would
I now look for the birth/baptism of a John, son of Griffith (Gruffydd)to try
to go back another generation? This is a rather daunting type of research,
but I'm sure it can be done. I have read that Welshmen were all taught to
know the names of their ancestors back at least 7 generations. But where,
other than in their memories, was any of this recorded?
Am fascinated reading the list about how much knowledge people have of their
Welsh ancestors, especially when it comes to the present day surnames such
as Jones. Look forward to hearing more from the list.

To the Merionethshire List:
The ancestors I am researching in Wales are:
John T. DAVIES, born January 6, 1829, possibly in Llandudno, Carnarvonshire,
was a farmer. He had parents Thomas DAVIES and Ann WELCH and siblings Hugh,
William, Evan, Thomas, David, Ellen, Ann and Edward. John came to the U.S.on the
Southampton, landing in New York on May 30, 1856. John's brothers Hugh and
William came to the U.S. later that year.
Ann PRITCHARD married John T. DAVIES after both emigrated to the U.S. Ann was
born September 5, 1836, at Rhostryfan, Carnarvonshire. Ann's parents were
Morris PRITCHARD and Ellen Unknown. Ann had two siblings, Morris and Richard.
Richard DAVIES. I have no other information about him except that he was a
labourer and the father of Lewis DAVIES who married Catherine ROBERTS, daughter
of Richard ROBERTS, a boatman, and Jane Unknown, on March 23, 1850 in Bangor
Cathedral, Bangor, Carnarvonshire. Their marriage certificate shows that
Lewis's residence at the time of marriage was Celynin, Merionethshire, and
Catherine's residence was Bangor. Lewis and Catherine had a son Lewis born on March 25,
1852, in Bangor. The father Lewis was a mariner and died at sea sometime
between August 1 and December 31, 1859, while serving on a ship carrying grain;
the ship capsized during a storm. I do not know his mariner's rank. The mother
Catherine was buried on July 8, 1852 in Upper Bangor, Carnarvonshire.
According to family lore, the son Lewis, whose mother died when he was an
infant and whose father's occupation took him away from home much of the time,
went to live with a Jones family. I have not, however, found Lewis in any Jones
family household, or in any household, in the 1861 census, which is the only
one that would have shown him in any household as a child.
Lewis DAVIES married Winifred JONES in April 1871, whether in Wales or in the
U.S., I do not know. Winifred was most probably a member of the JONES family
with whom Lewis went to live as a child. Winifred was born December 1845 so
she was about seven years older than Lewis and must have been pregnant when they
married. They came to the U.S. sometime before September 4, 1871, the birth
date of their first child, who was born in the U.S.
Winifred JONES' parents were William JONES born about 1813 in Denbighshire,
Carnarvonshire, and Ellen Unknown, born about 1814 in Denbighshire, and her
siblings were William born about 1840, Robert born about 1846, and John born
about 1849.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My son-in-law also had a JONES ancestor in Wales. Evan JONES, born December
1826 somewhere in Wales, emigrated to the U.S. from Wales, served in the Union
Army during the Civil War, was captured by Confederate soldiers at Gettysburg,
and died of disease at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Evan's parents were
William JONES and Sarah SIDNEY. I do not know from what part of Wales Evan
JONES emigrated.
My interest in Merionethshire is in the Jones family!
My great-grandmother was Annie Harriet Jones, later known as writer Gwyneth Vaughan. She was born in Talsarnau on July 5 1852. She was a political activist and toured around giving talks on Temperance, Women's Issues and a few other topics. She was admitted to the Gorsedd of Bards and was the first woman to give a speech from the Logan Stone.
She married John Jones, born 23 January 1849. He was born in Clwt y Bont, Llandienolan. The family moved to London for a couple of years so that he could complete his training as a doctor. I believe that he was the doctor for the quarry for many years. He changes his name to John Hughes Jones at that time.
I have found out a lot about Gwyneth Vaughan, but know very little of John, and I would like to find out more.
Any suggestions or information will be gratefully accepted.
Regards
Maureen Miles
With reference to Pam MILES' message about ancestors in Llangelynin & surrounding areas.
I have done some work on the EDWARDS family of the Felin, Llandrillo (I'm not related, but have met many members of the family), & have come across some PUGHs as shown below : -
Lewis PUGH (born c1802 Machynlleth) married Jane (born c 1810 Llangelynin, died 1899 Llandrillo).
Their daughter Jane PUGH (born c1851 Llangelynin, died 1943 Llandrillo) married 1877 at Llangelynin David EDWARDS (born c1853 Llandrillo, died 1914 Llandrillo).
Jane & David had 7 children (some born Llangelynin, some Llandrillo) : 2 of these children died in Australia - a number of descendants living there.
This must seem a pretty slim connection with Pam's family, but I thought that I'd post it anyway.
Jeff Delves
Hello Listers,
I am Pamela Miles (née EVANS) now living in Mayenne, France.
My Merionethsire connections are from Llanegryn, Llangelynin, Towyn,
Pennal, Aberdyfi.
Hugh Griffiths (1721) m. Jane ? (1720.
Their children were ?Elizabeth (1746), Owen (1748), Griffith (1755),
Evan (1761).
Evan GRIFFITHS married Gwen Richard. Their son Hugh (1792) married
Jane Pugh. They in turn had several children, of whom Hugh
(1831-1899) was my Gt. Grandfather. Hugh kept and pony and trap and
was a bit of a "jack of all trades", including being the local
dentist.
The ROWLANDS family seem to be from Towyn, Tal-y-Llyn and Corris.
David and Jane Rowlands had four daughters, Mary and Elizabeth
(possibly twins), Margaret and Jane. One of these daughters had twin
boys, Edmund and Richard, but I have yet to discover which daughter as
I have not been able to find a record of their birth in approximately
1859/60.
The EDWARDS family were from Pennal, but I have not got very far with
them as yet.
The PUGH and RICHARD connections are a little further back, in
Llanegryn and Llangelynin.
I would be interested to hear from anyone with interests in any of
these families.
Pam
Greetings,
Gordon from Bicester, Oxon here.
My great grandmother was Catherine Jones, born in
Llanuwchllyn on 18th Feb 1857. She married a Robert Jones
from Llanelidan, Denbigh, and they lived in the Bala area. I
believe they lived at a farm called Pyrsau. Both Catherine
and Robert came from very large and complex families.
After the death of Robert Jones, then Catherine Jones married
Evan Evans, born 1883 and they lived at Gwernygenau (one of
the farms flooded in 1965 to create the reservoir Llyn Celyn
to supply the residents of Liverpool with water. That
however, is another discussion!).
This second union produced 4 children -
Kate Myfanwy Evans (died 1998 at the age of 104!)
John Evans (emigrated to Canada)
Mair Olwen Evans (apparently became an opera singer)
Menna Beryl Evans (emigrated to Canada)
I'm very curious about Evan Evans. We always understood that
it was his second marriage to Catherine Jones, having
previously been married to Jane Jones, with one daughter Jane
Ellin Jones. But I believe he may have had a marriage prior
to his marriage to Jane Jones. Although not blood relatives
to me, I am very interested in more information about this
branch of the family.
I was most interested in the message from Ray JONES of Rochdale regarding the descendants of Wm JONES of Ty Nant, Llandderfel.
Earlier this year I had some correspondence with Rhiannon GRIFFITHS [10 Avon Court, Mold, Flintshire, CH7 1JP] : Rhiannon had asked for help in "Hel Achau" [Clwyd FHS Journal] & also in the Llandrillo Parish Church Newsletter for March 2004 regarding the family of her grandfather William JONES, born at the Felin, Llandrillo, on 5th September 1866. In his message, Ray refers to "Thomas the 5th [son] lives at Llandrillo aged 86 [this in 1849] .... [his son] John lives [lived?] at Felin Newydd Llandrillo ...he died May 1847 ... his son William lives at the same place." This son William & his wife Anne had children including John JONES (born Llandrillo c1845) who married Jane (born Llandrillo c1843), who were parents of the William JONES born 1866 referred to above. Ray will no doubt be able to obtain further details from Rhiannon. This quite extensive branch of the JONES family lived initially at the Felin in Llandrillo (still standing, but no longer a working mill) & later at !
Tyddyn Famaeth (various spellings, up the Ceidiog valley from Cadwst, no longer exists), then further up the valley at Cernyw in 1891 & 1901.
Regarding "Thomas the 5th" :
1) Thomas was buried at Llandrillo 14 January 1857 age 97, ie born c1760. Lived at Tynyfach, Llandrillo.
2) Reference to Thomas having 6 sons & 2 daughters : these appear to be listed as William, John, Griffith, Thomas, Evan, Mary, David & Margaret. I guess that William was in fact born at Felin Clettwr. After Griffith the list goes a bit haywire : Griffith JONES married Elizabeth HUGHES at Llandrillo church on 29 January 1827. The list of Llandrillo baptisms 1813-1836 shows Griffith & Elizabeth having 2 children - Thomas (bapt 25 Nov 1827, born Tynygroes, Llandrillo) & Evan (bapt 4 Oct 1829, born Wern Llan, Llandrillo) - Griffith described as a sawyer in both cases.
3) Reference following "Evan the writer of this..." to "Jane died 1836 aged 3 years". I cannot find any baptism or burial of this Jane JONES in Llandrillo church records.
