Hello!
Recent posts about coffin plates at Capel Penstryd prompt me to post the following entry from the chapel register:
1799 John the son of David DAVIES of Beddcoedwr by Sara his wife was born July 20 & was baptised July 28th 1799 by me W. Jones.
(The transcript has the mother as Jane, but I think this must be incorrect)
I believe David DAVIES and Sara to be my paternal gt. gt. gt. grandparents. David and Sarah appear to have married at Trawsfyndd:
Trawsfynydd Parish Register (Ref: Z/PE/3/2)
No. 227

There are the following children baptised at Trawsfynydd:

1785 January 16th bapt. David son of David DAVIES of BeddyCoedwr & Sarah his wife.
1786 July 16th bapt. Lowry Dr. of David DAVIES & Sarah his Wife of Beddycoedwr.
I havn't seen the register later than 1787.
John DAVIES appears later in Dolgellau where he married Elizabeth PUGH in 1825. John and Sarah's daughter, Sarah, born 1849, married my great grandfather Walter CURTIS in Dolgellau. He was a gardner at Abergwynant. They later moved to East Yorkshire.
The following are the relevant register entries:

Hi David
I'm afraid we don't have Llanuwchllyn transcribed, but I believe we do
have the film. If you don't mind waiting we can take a look next time
we are going through it. Was your Edward born in Llanwuchllyn or do
you suspect that he was living there in 1861 and was born somewhere
else. We took a look at Llanfawr just in case he was there because
there are a lot of folks living in Llanfawr that were born in
Llanuwchllyn but we didn't find him. Who was he with in 1871, family?

Hello Doreen and John
Would you have details for 1861 for Llanwuchllyn? I have a note that Edward
Roberts (sorry about that!) was 6 years old but no note of other details.
In 1871 he was 16 and described as a farmer's son.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I think I may have traced your ancestor.
1.Samuel Pierce (dd.1722) = Catherine uch Richard (dd.1726/7)
Llanfrothen; Hendre Fechan, Nanmor, Beddgelert
Ballad Singer/Writer & Yeoman
2.Pierce Samuel (dd.1760) = Elizabeth uch Hywel (1689-1765)
Gelli Goch Isaf, Llanfrothen
3.Samuel Pierce (bapt.1713) = Lucras Owen (dd.1781)
[Gelli'r Cornwydydd], Llanfrothen
4.Pierce Samuel (c.1739-1818) = Margaret Daniel (c.1738-1830)
Gelli'r Cornwydydd, Llanfrothen
5.Samuel Pierce (1770-1840) = (2) Margaret Jones - his 2nd cousin (bapt.1784; fl.1841)
Beddgelert; Cefn Cyffin, Llanfrothen
6.Catherine Samuel (1816-95) = Evan Jones alias Evan (John) Evans (c.1820-87)
Ogof Oronwy, Llanfrothen
7.Diana Jones (bn.1857; fl.1901) = (1) Thomas Roberts alias Thomas Roberts Jones (c.1853/4- 1881/91)
Blaen y Cae, Llanfrothen (1881); 3,Tanygrisiau Terrace, Blaenau Ffestiniog (1891); Ffestiniog (1901)
8.Catherine Ann Roberts (bn.1880; fl.1901) = William Williams
Ffestiniog; Maesteg, Glamorgan
Evidence that Diana Jones was daughter of Evan & Catherine Jones Ogof Oronwy, Llanfrothen (I haven't checked the 1861/71 Llanfrothen census returns):-
(a) Evan & Catherine Jones' daughter Elin Jones "formerly of Ogof Oronwy" (on her gravestone at Ramoth, Llanfrothen) & husband were at the other Blaen y Cae, Llanfrothen in 1881 (it must have been a two household dwelling), and then at 9,Tanygrisiau Terrace in 1891 (near Diana in both cases). Elin named a daughter Diana (Ellen) (bn.1872) - a very rare name in N.W.Wales, and suggestive of a close family link.
(b) Diana named children Evan & Catherine (her parents' names).
(c) An Edward Williams who was lodging at her parents' house, Ogof Oronwy, in 1881 was boarding with Diana and her 2nd husband in Ffestiniog in 1901. He may have been a relative.
I'm working on a 'total descent' chart for Samuel Pierce & Catherine uch Richard of Hendre Fechan (who were also ancestors of mine), at the top of the above line. You can see an online version in need of some updating on my website at http://www.aprheinallt.plus.com/samuel.html (Welsh language).

It's interesting that you should mention Bedd y Coedwr in this thread, as I
started it by quoting from a biography of the Rev William Williams of Wern who
was a member of Penystryd chapel before entering the ministry. The Biography
states that Rev williams first "saw the light" in a religious meeting held
in Bedd y Coedwr the home of Dafydd Dafis (ie Welsh for David Davies) and
Sarah Morris, his wife.
The biography doesn't give much information about David and Sarah, except to
say that Sarah probably lead the hymn singing because she was a "notable
songstress and extremely tuneful."
The biography does however contain an engraving of Bedd y Coedwr which I can
scan and send to you if you like.
All the best

As your query is asking for a Bl Ffestiniog connection this IS the correct board on which to make your query.
I would be 95% certain that your ggandfather's father was a Mr Butler. Although double-barrelled surnames are generally considered "posh", it was quite common for illegitimate Welsh children to be given a father-mother double barrelled surname in the late 19th early 20th centaury.
I found this entry on the Cheshire BMD site
Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1870
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference
JONES John Butler Mottram Tameside MOT/17/23
I wonder if he is your man?
If you go to the Cheshire BMD site at:
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=cheshire
enter Jones in the Surname box and John Butler (not just J) in the initial box you will find the entry. If you click on the reference number, you will be given a form, which you can use to send to the registrar to enquire about the details on the birth certificate

His name was John Butler-Jones, i know he was married in 1894 so i'm assuming he was born 1864-74. I might be able to find out more. However, i don't think his mother put her first name on the certificate because an uncle tried to do some research a while ago and hit a dead end, because i think the mother was just registered as X Jones. He was brought up in an orphanage in Manchester, possibly around Oldham, but that's just me speculating.
I realize the absurdity of asking for a Miss Jones as obviously there were a lot of them. But nothing ventured nothing gained. I might be able to find out more about him, but probably not his mother or father, not sure if he was called Butler or if he was The Butler. Which was why i tried the message board in case someone had actually heard of someone like her.
Thankyou both for your advise. Sorry for getting the board wrong, i did look on a map but it didn't have all the counties.
Rowena.

Helo eto Gruff,
On the census for Argoed for 1841 we have John Jones aged 74, wife Anne aged
65, and Robert aged 37. In 1851 Ann was on her own, aged 80. In 1861, only
the servants were at home (which has always intrigued me) - Margaret
Roberts, David Jones and William Jones.
In Pantyneuadd in 1841 we have Robert Evans aged 45, wife Jane aged 43 and 7
children. In 1851, Robert and Jane and 5 children - two girls having flown
the nest. In 1861, Jane, the wife and two sons, John and Morris.
No sign of Ellis anywhere, sorry!
Enid.

Subject: Re: [MER] JOHN JONES ARGOED LLANYCIL
Thank you Enid and Pat Coster and others for the very useful information and
comments regarding John Jones Argoed Llanycil.Through your kind assistance I
have now finally got several things to tie up but other avenues have also
opened up.It appears that Anne Roberts (1773-1831) of Rhiwgoch Trawsfynydd
married John Jones (1765-1812) Argoed Llanycil in Trawsfynydd (17 July 1796)
and they had the following issue:
Jane(b1798) who married Richard Evans and lived at Pant y Neuadd,
Elizabeth(b1808) who married John Jones Cyffdy and Catherine (b1810) who
married John Lloyd Dol Llychwin. It would still be nice to see the early
census records for Pant y Neuadd and the Argoed to tie things up and to see
if we can trace the son Ellis Jones and any other issue.
Whilst searching in this area my attention was drawn to the four volumes of
the History of the Independent Churches in Wales of 1871.This wonderful
comprehensive document is now available from Archive CD Books for under £20
postfree but unfortunately for many people it is all in Welsh. It contains
quite detailed accounts of the setting up of chapels over the whole of
Wales. In it I found that my gg grandfather Edward Davies Y Wyddor had
provided the information about Trawsfynydd and the neighbouring
areas.Amongst the history of setting up Penstryd chapel I found an account
of John Jones (b abt 1760) of Aeddren Llangwm who had married Jane Price
only daughter of Robert Price Gilfachwen Trawsfynydd (a descendent of the
Gerddibluog family)about 1785. Although a devoted pacifist he was persued by
cavalrymen as an agitator, his home was searched and ransaked and he fled to
America without his family. When he returned a few years later he was
imprisoned in Ruthin to stand trial but the case was thrown out after two
days and he was set free.
No specific dates are given in the CDBook but whilst searching the LDS files
for John Jones Argoed I came across a gedcom record of John Jones's family
which was a wonderful find for me just at this time.
One last small point I wonder if anybody has information about the family of
Maddocks the former head master of Bala primary School. He married Maggie
Jones Bryngwyn Trawsfynydd about 1915. She was the eldest daughter of
Richard Jones (and Elizabeth Pugh) Dolfawr Llanelltyd.
Thank you all for your kind assistance

In the mid to late 1800s a quarter of the population of Blaenau Ffestiniog used the surname Jones, and many hundreds of young girls from the town went to places such as Manchester to work in service. So unless somebody happens to have a very personal knowledge of your family it is unlikely that the information that you have provided will be enable any of the users of this board to help you find your ancestor.
In order to help you find your great great great grandmother, we need to know as much as possible about your great great grandfather. By finding records of his life it may be possible to know where to look for details of his mother (and if you are very lucky, even his father). If you could send the board everything you know about your gggrandfather, and where you got this information from, I'm sure that somebody will be able to help with your research.
Hello Trevor
You really do choose ancestors with complicated family trees - my "JONES of Cadwst" file on Family Tree Maker must be the most difficult I have, built up from a variety of sources, but with far too many gaps. Anyway, what I do find in my transcribed records about the families of your Thomas JONES of Cadwst (son of John JONES of Tynyfach & Mary DAVIES of Cadwst) and his wife Margaret JONES of Tynyfach ('daughter of Edward JONES, deceased'), married Glanrafon 1874, is ........
1) 1871 Llandrillo Census : at Cadwst, Garthiaen, living with only a boarder, ie no children at home -
216. JONES, John Head 51 Farmer of 17 acres born Llanfor
217. JONES, Mary Wife 61 Farmer's wife born Llandrillo
Thomas JONES, born c1849 ie age c22, son of the above, not found in Llandrillo.
Margaret JONES, born c1849, ie age c22, Thomas's future wife, daughter of Edward JONES, not found in Llandrillo.
2) 1881 Census : married Thomas & Margaret JONES not found in Llandrillo, but listed among the Llandrillo-born strays, living at Frondeg, Corwen is Thomas JONES, 30, railway guard, with his wife Margaret, 30, born Glyndwfrdwy [sic], & 2 sons.
At Cadwst, Garthiaen, are -
116. JONES, John Head W 61 Farmer of 17 acres born Llanfor
117. JONES, William Son M 27 Farmer's son born Llandrillo
118. JONES, Elizabeth SonW M 23 Son's wife born Llanllyfni, CAE
119. JONES, Robert W Gson 2 born Llandrillo
3) 1861 Llandrillo Census : no sign of the sought-for Thomas & Margaret JONES, which is perhaps hardly surprising as the large townships of Garthiaen & Faerdref are missing from this census.
4) 1851 Llandrillo Census : at Cadwst, Garthiaen, all born Llandrillo apart from John born Llanvor -
742. JONES, John Head M 32 Farmer 32 acres - 1 lab
743. JONES, Mary Wife M 42 --
744. JONES, David Son -- 5 Scholar
745. JONES, Thomas Son -- 1 At home
746. DAVIES, Elizabeth Mother in Law W 81 Pauper farmer
5) 1841 Llandrillo Census : at Cadwst, Garthiaen, all born in county -
549. DAVIES, David 76 Farmer
550. DAVIES, Elizabeth 66
551. DAVIES, Mary 30
552. DAVIES, John 40
553. DAVIES, John 12 Ind
554. DAVIES, Mary 2
6) Llandrillo Church Burials 1837-1868 :
441. John DAVIES Cadwst bur 10 Dec 1844 age 48
545. David DAVIES Cadwst Bach bur 27 Mar 1851 age 83
654. Elizabeth DAVIES Cadwst bur 6 Mar 1860 age 91
7) Llandrillo Church Burials 1868-1920 :
152. Mary Elizabeth JONES Cadwst Bach bur 11 Oct 1880 age 13 weeks
162. Mary JONES Cadwst bur 29 Jan 1881 age 72 "The First Dissenting Funeral in the Parish Church Yard. This funeral was certified by John JONES Cadwst".
8) Llandrillo MIs : translated & simplified -
F60 : John JONES Cadwst 1819-1902. Elizabeth JONES beloved wife of William JONES 1857-1921. Also John D JONES her son 1882-1911. William JONES 1853-1944.
Comments : I'm afraid that the above isn't of much use, little by way of records of the Thomas & Margaret who married in 1874. Why not? Partly, I reckon, because they weren't always in Llandrillo, & also because marriages/baptisms were held in nonconformist chapels. Suggestions -
1) How about following-up 1881 census information? Is it possible that when Thomas & Margaret married at Glanrafon, Corwen, in 1874, Margaret JONES was simply a maid/servant at Tynyfach and was born at Glyndyfrdwy - look there in 1851 census (+ 1861, 1871).
2) My "JONES of Cadwst" on Family Tree Maker shows -
a) Thomas JONES (b1848, d 24 Oct 1913, Corwen?) married Margaret JONES (c1851-c1883) had 2 sons - John (c1875-?) & Edward. John married Jennie, & they had 4 sons : Hywel, Arthur, Berwyn, & Emrys T.
b) Thomas's father was John JONES (b 26 Apr 1819 Llanfor, d 12 Mar 1902 Llandrillo). His first wife was Mary DAVIES, b Llandrillo 1809, d Llandrillo Jan 1881. His second wife was Ann ELLIS, b Llandrillo 1841, d Llandrillo 25 Apr 1919 - they married Dec 1889 at Zion, Corwen.
c) The parents of John JONES (1819-1902) were John JONES (c1780-?) and Margaret WILLIAMS (c1791-?), married 31 Mar 1809 Llanfor.
3) John JONES (1819-1902) was born in Llanfor; when he married at Glanrafon in 1844 he was c25 yrs old. My guess is that he was no more than a servant at Tynyfach, Llandrillo, at the time, with little if any family connection there.
4) References to Tynyfach in Llandrillo censuses : 1841 none, 1851 3 households at Tynyfach between Rhos & Tynyfrith, 1861 none, 1871 1 household of 16 persons between Tyddynllan & Rhos ucha, 1881 1 household of 12 persons between Rhos Uchaf & Tyddyn Llan, 1891 1 household between Tynyffridd & Penygeulan. I can't help noticing that in 1871, 1881 & 1891 the PHILLIPS family at Tynyfach came from Glyndyfrdwy. Was Margaret JONES employed as a maid/servant there because of their common origins in Glyndyfrdwy??
