We have just added the following indexes to the North Wales BMD
database:
Machynlleth Registration District - Deaths Indexes:
Machynlleth sub-district
1837 - 1950 (9,328 deaths)
Darowen sub-district
1837 - 1917 (5,200 deaths)
Machynlleth and Darowen sub-districts were merged on 1 October 1917 - the
enlarged sub-district continued to be known as "Machynlleth".
Once again, our thanks to Bryn Ellis (the Montgomeryshire co-ordinator for
the project) and his team of volunteers, for their work in photocopying,
transcribing and checking all these index books; and also to the staff of
Machynlleth Register Office, who have given considerable help with the
project.
Please note that there is a complete list of the deaths coverage to date at:
www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/deathcov.html
and:
www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/deathcov-c.html
and there is a list of *all* the updates, in chronological order, at:

A Christmas Puzzle for our readers!
Found in 1871 Census for Llanuwchllyn : RG10/5685/24/7.
The following 9 individuals are found at Plasdeon, Cynllwyd Township, Llanuwchllyn on Sunday 2nd April 1871 [many of the names are difficult to decipher, largely because so much has to be fitted into the relatively small 'box' on the census form] -
1) S.A.R. Le Prince Julius S.V. et de Ponthieu, Head, Married, 44, Noble of the Empire of France, born Weybridge Surrey.
2) S.A.R. La Princesse Eliza V.et de Ponthieu, Wife, Married, 34, his wife, born St Saviour Jersey Channel Isles.
3) S.A.R. Le Prince Julius S.V. et de Ponthieu, Son, 13, born Quimper France Brittany.
4) S.A.R. Robert S.V. et de Ponthieu, Son, 8, born Grouville Jersey Channel Isles.
5) S.A.R. La Princesse Lilian V. et de Ponthieu, Daur, 7, born Grouville Jersey Channel Isles.
6) S.A.R. Nithard N.V.V. Ponthieu, Son, 2, born Pawlett Somerset.
7) Ann Auriol, Aunt, Widow, 72, born Newent Gloucester.
8) Letititia Jane de Vismes, Aunt, Unmarried, 76, born Newent Gloucester.
9) Nancis Jane Hodges, Servant, Married, 25, General Servant Domestic, born Wicclescombe Somerset.
Other Information.
1) Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871 : Paris surrendered 28 January 1871, peace signed in May 1871 - the month in which the Paris Commune was savagely repressed by the recently elected largely monarchist French government.
2) 1881 census seems to show only 2 of the above individuals, living at Don Road No 1, St Saviour, Jersey -
i) Eliza de Vismes, Head, Annuitant, widow, 49, born St Saviour Jersey.
ii) Robert S de Vismes, Son, Clerk, Unmarried, 19, born Grouville Jersey.
3) IGI on Familysearch shows Laetitia de Visme christened 8 July 1795 Newent Gloucestershire, daughter of James de Visme and Elizabeth. James and Elizabeth are also shown as the parents of the following children, christened in the years shown - James Edward (1791), Philippa (1792, married John Holder 1813), Francis (1793), and Julia (1807).
Questions.
1) Why was this family of the 'French Nobility' staying at Llanuwchllyn?
2) Why can only 2 of the 9 people shown be traced in the 1881 census?
3) Are the names (and initials) given above correct, what do the initials stand for, and where is "Wicclescombe, Somerset"?

I recently found family on the 1881 Census. (EVANS). The dwelling is noted as Heigh St and the Census Place as Llanfihangel Y Traethau. What area would this Census Place cover. Is there a Heigh Street in Penrhyn?
Thanks and a Merry Xmas to all.
Jenny
In the 18 th Century could a woman -widow/daughter inherit property/land etc or would it pass to son/ son in law/nephew/grandson.
This bit is probably more for Merionethshire. Has any one come across Cwm/Cwmerhaidd/with or without Isaf or Uchaf in Mallwyd? Would be delighted to hear from you if you have. Many thanks, Ann
If you think your not doing too well come and sit where I am. Have just got
onto the Clwyd site, went to Transcription of Parish Registers page-no
mention of Gwytherin. Exactly where do I findthe words Gwytherin Parish
Registers. Just imagine you are explaining to an idiot because that is just
how I feel. Ann

After being lost for many weeks the Dictionary of Welsh Biography is now
back on line – hooray!
http://yba.llgc.org.uk/
It’s re-appearance does come with a warning from the National Library,
however:
Warning to Users
We apologise that Welsh Biography Online has not been online over the last
few weeks. Following an unfortunate incident the server supporting WBO
suffered a catastrophic event that destroyed the server's hard disk. Then,
after putting the resource back online on another server it suffered an
unauthorised and anonymous incursion so that it had to be taken offline
again. We are now offering it online on a new server with upgraded software
and increased security. At the same time we are working on a new version
that we hope to publish on the Web in the following weeks. However, we would
warn our users that this present version retains some glitches in the search
and display functions and we ask you to be patient until we have resolved
these problems with the forthcoming new version.
All the best
Alwyn

Hello Ann
I am sure you will find that the Llanrwst registers cover only Llanrwst,
Gwytherin and other villages have their own parish registers, but they all
come under the Llanrwst umbrella for registration district. So for
certificates they are classed as Llanrwst.
I am sure some of our most learned fellow listers will correct me if I'm
wrong.
Patricia

Hi List
Sometime ago someone was looking for information on a COLLINGS in the Corwen/Gwyddelwern area.
John came across this today and thought someone might be interested
Marriage - Llanycil

witnesses - John Evans & Rowland David
Doreen & John
Hamilton, Canada.
Dear Listers
Allow me Alwyn to make the following announcement on the mailing list. Several messages have been posted on the site expressing concern about the non delivery of the Gwynedd FHS Winter journal. Our General Secretary/Journal Editor: Yvonne Edwards recently moved address and before finalising the editing of the proofs a computer virus delayed proceedings. It appears that the time period until Xmas will not be sufficient for the printers to be able to prepare the issue until the New Year. All membership subscriptions across the range have been increased by £2 (two pounds) Our own website www.gwynedd.fsbusiness.co.uk and the GENfair site have been updated and therefore there are no problems with new members and renewals overseas via GENfair. It was considered of the utmost importance for the journal to be circulated before 1st January 2005 in order for members who settle by standing order to have the opportunity to make amendments with their bank etc. I appeal to those of y!
ou who fall within this category to take the necessary steps and to inform any friends, colleages or aquaintances who are not on the mailing list or have no e-mail facilities to do likewise. This will alleviate the huge backlog of adjusting the subscription fees for those unaware of the change when the journal is delivered. A new membership secretary has been appointed. He is Mr Ieuan W. Williams, Llain yr Ardd, Bethel, Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 1UU. e-mail Ieuwyn(a)aol.com

You don't specify where your Blower family lived.
There was a marriage connection between my Corwen area family (Roberts) and Blowers in Ellesmere, but it was a common surname in Shropshire. I have details if relevant.
because I feel I have had the biggest present ever.I started out trying to solve the puzzle of Sussanah before moving on with the Owen line. But tonight I have possibly -I need to carefully check all the print outs-found them from 1704-2004, just 1861/1871 tocomplete, having started out with 1881-1901. I know I have Doreen and John, and Robert O
wen to thank as they gave me the 1841.1851 census and the LDSrecords produced the rest with children, wives and both sets of parents. How lucky can you get?
Could someome who speaks Welsh tell me if the Pentre Fotty of 1851 is the same as Pant y fotty 1841.
ROBERT- the David Owens 1841 with Jane-they all seemed to marry a Jane- could be the son of William b.1747 and Jane Davies b1743.
At this rate my Jones/Cwmerhaid/Mallwyd might get a look in this winter.
Thanks again,
Ann

Ann,
There are two entries in the 1841 census which may be
relevant, providing you with the names of even more children
of William Owens.
HO107-1402-3-9
Pant y fotu [Pant y fotty]
William Owens 35 Ag Lab
Jane Owens 35
Mary Owens 13
David Owens 10
Robert Owens 7
Jane Owens 5
William Owens 1
Grace Owens 1
On the previous page of the census is another entry for
Pant y fotty. Presumably one or other is Pant y fotty bach
but I am little puzzled by them not being adjacent in the
census sequence, since they are only a hundred yards apart
on the map. At 1300 feet high up on the hill, perhaps the
enumerator got a little dizzy.
HO107-1402-3-8
Pant y fotu [Pant y fotty]
David Owens 65 Farmer
Jane Owens 30 (possibly 50)
John Thomas 40
I include this entry also because David Owens might be the father
of William Owens.
My own ancestor William Owens came from Tyn Ddol in the northern
part of Gwytherin. He was born in 1790, and as far as I know
there was no relationship.
Robert Owen

Thanks Mike for your interest and help. I know very little about Samuel and Jane, I have my great grandmother's birth cert., so I know her parents' names. Someone sent me info from the 1871 census, which seems to fit the family and lists Jane as 27, making her year of birth 1844 and her place of birth Cyffilliogg, Denbighshire(my ggmother was born in Cyffilliog,so that fits). My ggrandmother was the eldest child on the census at 5, so I'm assuming their marriage was in about 1863/4, but so far can find nothing. Thanks again
