Hello fellow listers,
>From a funeral notice I just found in some family papers, it appears I have
a small group of people (relations) from Ruthin. This research is all
relatively current (circa 1990's), but worth a shot.
Does anyone from the area recognise these names?
They were all alive and well in 1993 when my Aunt died (Mary Edwards aged
74). These people would have family links to Angelsea and/or Chester. I do
not know where these people were born (sadly).
Mr and Mrs Emlyn Williams (prob born circa 1917)
Mrs Gwen Edwards (prob born circa 1930)
Mr John Edwards (poss Gwen's husband or father born circa 1880-1890)
Mr K Parry & his wife (prob born circa 1930 - his wife is the relative)
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. This name has several variations, one being "Pump" (five) and "Lumon" (chimney) - in this case Plinlimmon Farm has three chimneys - but who knows may have had five at one time or possibly just so named for a familiar landmark back home in Wales. This Owings/Owen branch is believed to have migrated from Merioneth (Owen Humphrey) but no one knows for sure.

On a wonderful series about the role of the Welsh in the American Civil war,
broadcast on S4C recently, there was mention of a Joseph H. Griffiths
originally from the Ffestiniog area who died in the war and of a poem written in his
memory by his kinsman Humphrey Griffiths.
As I have a number of family members using the names Humphrey Griffiths and
Griffith Humphreys from the Trawsfynydd / Ffestiniog area I wonder if this
soldier could be related.
Do any of our American list members know of any web sites where further
details of those who died in the Civil War may be found?
All the best

Alwyn, you asked for a source for Civil War information. A friend of
mine gave me the following site:

I hope he is able to help you.

Dear Alwyn,
Thank you very much for the lookup. This is very helpful to us.
I do have John in the 1881 with Gwen and one son, Richard, so you're right he
was not at home that night. I'll make a note to check other counties as they
become available.
Many thanks,

This is a difficult one.
I can find neither an Elizabeth or a Jane Pri(t)chard, of anything near the
right ages, born in Cardiganshire on the 1871 Censuses so far transcribed by
Ancestry.
Despite the useful O it is impossible to decide which one of the many
hundreds of John Jones born in Anglesey might be yours.
It is possible that both the Pritchard family and the Jones family were in
the USA in 1871, and, as their eldest children were born in America, that John
and Elizabeth married in the US before returning to Wales?
Have you found any of the family in later census returns in either Wales or
the US (if they went back there) that might help point to a town, parish or
village of birth which may be easier to search for than just the Counties given
in 1881?

Alwyn, Many thanks for providing this lookup service.
Could you please look up Robert Owen for me?
1841 Census: Llanaber - Uwchmynydd township
Robert Owen, 30, Weaver (can't read the name of the place but the last
word looks like "buchan"). Farms near there that I can read are "Goetre
uchaf" and Goetre isaf".
Lydia Owen, 25.
1851 Census: Llanaber - Uwchmynydd township
Robert Owen, 44, weaver, Bwlch yr ysgol farm name, born in Llanaber
Lidia Owen, wife, 38, born in Llanfihangel y Pennant
Jennet Jones, mother-in-law, unmarried, 84, pauper (servant woman), born
in Talyllyn (sp?)
1861: I don't have this information.
Thanks again.

Hello David,
I shall send you a copy of the 1871 census image for this one off list, as
the only possible Margaret that I can find has the word Daughter crossed out and
replaced with Mother, then the age 15 crossed out and replaced with 50!
You can look at the image and decide for yourself :-)

No sign of John, who seems to have been away from home on the night of the
census, possibly in one of the counties not yet transcribed by Ancestry, or
possibly missed off the census because his wife expected him to be included where
he stayed the night and his hosts expected him to be included at home.

I have found Edward

As Edward has a schedule number all of his own, I suspect that he was living
in an outbuilding at Caerdeon. Cardeon mansion was occupied at this time by
Rev William Edward Relf and his family, a gentleman clergyman.
having tried all combinations of surname and age, I am unable to find John.
He may already have moved to England at this time.
Gradually Ancestry will index the 1871 for the whole of England and Wales, at
the moment they only have the five westernmost counties of Wales (pleasantly
unusual in the genealogy world for Merioneth to be the first part of the UK to
be published). When the home counties of England appear on the database it
might be worth having another look for John.
Bastardy Bonds and settlement orders are very few and far between in
Merionethshire, so its extremely unlikely that you will find any in respect of John &
Edward, especially as they both appear to have the same father (Mr Pugh,
probably John Pugh), which suggests more than a casual arrangement and that the
father is acknowledged in their names. If any bonds or orders exist they will be
in Merioneth Archives.

Hope this helps. The high moorland plateau of Pumlumon (as it should be in Welsh, the "u" in each case being pronounced as the "i" in "him") straddles the border of Ceredigion and Powys (modern counties) or Cardiganshire and Montgomeryshire (traditional counties). The highest point, Pumlumon Fawr, is just about in Ceredigion, but its not the sort of hill where you're particularly aware of a highest point even when you're on it. It's a very bleak place.
The meaning of the name is not completely certain. Conventional wisdom (ie what we were taught in school) suggests that it gets its name from its providing the sources of 5 rivers (including GB's longest, the Severn). "Pump" incidentally is the Welsh for "five". However, I've seen another quite compelling suggestion based on the idea that "llumon" is the Welsh for a beacon or signal fire: ie "five beacons". Elsewhere, I've seen yet another idea which has some mileage in it if the English version of the name, "Plynlimon" is closer to the original Welsh. "Plym" is Welsh for "lead", which has been mined on and around Pumlumon for a long time, on quite a large scale in the 18th and 19th centuries. I'm afraid I can't answer this part of your query once and for all, but I hope this helps a bit.
Hi All
Can anyone tell me how to find "Dinas Ddu" Slate mine (or where it was) and can you tell me anything about it?

The easy questions are always the most difficult to answer! Beddgelert has
been in both Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, and at one time the county
border split the parish in half. So the answer to the question "is this the right
list for Beddgelert?" is yes and no.
Most questions relating to Beddgelert might normally be posted on the
WLS-CAERNARFONSHIRE list. But, as almost all researchers who have family in a border
parish have family on both sides of the border, I would suspect that those
with an interest in Beddgelert will be members of both lists. So feel free to ask
your question here.
To confuse matters more there is another list which covers the three historic
counties of north west Wales (Merionethshire, Caernarfonshire and Anglesey)
WLS-GWYNEDD.
