Hi
John found these in the 1851 census for Llandderfel
(note that Ellis Williams of Maesod has a daughter Margaret and a son named Edward--could be a son of Edward & Margaret, Gist Faen)

Further to my earlier note, I have just checked and found that my Evan
WILLIAMS was at Cistfaen in 1861.
Further, it looks like he married an Anne EVANS of Llandderfel (and I, too,
am grateful to Doreen & John in Canada for a number of insights). It seems
Anne was the daughter of an Evan EVANS and his wife Anne, who may have been
born outside Merioneth. I mention these EVANS in particular because the
message to which Arfor was responding referred to EVANS in the area.

Hi David,
1841 census lists following living at Cistfaen:
Edward Williams, 45, Farmer, Born in County.
Margaret 45 "
David 11 "
Elizabeth 7 "
I cannot find Hafotty Cynwyd in Llandrillo but as Cynwyd is a little village about 4 miles North there is a Hafotty listed there.
William Davies, 55, Farmer, Born in County.
Gwen 27 "
Robert 2 "
Hope this is of help.
Arfor (Criccieth)
Hello Arfor,
Thanks for the research. I'd tried old-maps, but as you say,
Masod isn't identified. Now I've got an area to work with.
Graham.

Hi Graham,
Have looked up the 1841 and found Gop, Maesod, Cistfaen, Hafotty Wen and Hafotty Ganol next to each other.
If you try WWW.old-maps.com and put in 299882,338807 in the search bit on the left side, press coordinates and search and it will take you to the map in question where you will find all above, but unfortunately, no Maesod.
As the map is in the 1890's I should imagine that this particular household is no longer there, or alternately it is part of the Gop house which seems to be quite large according to the census.

Hi All,
I have a reference (thanks to Doreen and John) to an Evans family
in Llandderfel in 1841.They are living in Doldrewyn (or Dol-drewyn) and
specifically at Maesod. I've scoured maps old and new but can't pin down
Maesod. If anyone has the 1841 census to hand could you give me the places
on the census walk route before & after Maesod? Previously this has been
quite successful!

Hello All,
I would be grateful if someone, who has access to either or both the 1841 and 1851 census for Llanuwchllyn, could let me know who was living in Ty Mawr, Llanuwchllyn. I believe there are two Ty Mawrs - one in Pennantlliw and the other in Penaran and I am hoping that the census identifies each one.

Hello Aled,
Between 1785 and 1810 there are the following baptism entries in the Llanuwchllyn PRs -
Nov 28, 1813 David s/o John Thomas and Catherine / farmer ,Caepoeth
Jan 23, 1787 David s/o Rowland Thomas and Anne/Penaran.
At the Dolgellau Archives there is a register for "Bala Annibynwyr Births and Baptisms" covering 1770 - 1839 which may be worth looking at . Ref Z/DS/2/5
About this time there were many confusing entries in both the Llanuwchllyn PRs and BTs and many illegible entries due to the condition of the registers. There are also fewer entries in the registers in the 1790s compared with the early 1780 s which leads one to suspect that maybe some baptisms were not entered.
I have not been able to locate the Llanuwchllyn baptism of my ancestor Griffith s/o Robert Jones and Jane born in 1796 (from gravestone) and David Roberts born in 1793 in Llanuwchllyn. I also know two other researchers who have not been able to find the baptisms of their ancestors in Llanuwchllyn in this period.
If you come across these entries during your research I would be grateful if you could contact me.
Hwyl,
Elfed Owen.
Hi All
Could someone please look-up the baptizm of David
Thomas c abt 1800 in LLanuwchllyn.
Much appreciated

Louisa Hartmann (age 51, caretaker) and her daughter, Jessie Mary (age 22, parlourmaid), resided in Llangelynin according to the 1901 census index on-line. Both were from Shoreditch, London. Louisa, neé Barfield, was the widow of Wilhelm Hartmann. Her older daughters were Louisa and Florence.
What became of the Hartmanns after April, 1901? Where would Louisa have been "caretaker" in Llangelynin? Her past work history includes matron of an orphanage and domestic in a vicarage.
Louisa was the sister of my ancestor, but I'm trying to see if I can track any descendants from her to the present. It's tough when she had only daughters!
I don't subscribe to the Rootsweb Merionethshire list, so I'd appreciate any e-mail responses sent directly to me at billie(a)tnhillbillie.net
