Hello,
The Edward Morgan family came from Bala Wales circa 1690 and settled at the same Quaker Meeting House as your Foulke's family. If I remember right at one point a Morgan married a Foulke of the Gwynedd Meeting. Should you learn anything of the historical background of their need to move to Pennsylvania or of the locality information in Wales, I would be very grateful to know what you have learned.
Thank you,
E. A. Morgan

Hi to all Listers
Does anyone have an idea as to how I can trace army service details of my great great great grandfather, Edward Davies, born circa 1792 in or near Bryn Crug, Tywyn. All I know is that he fought at Waterloo in 1815.

Hello All,
I recently transcribed the following information about my gt x2 grandfather(Griffith Jones) and his father(Robert Jones) from the Llanuwchllyn Tithe Account book for 1811-1817. (NLW MG19667A)
1811
Penarran Bl ? (this is only a guess) £ s d
Griffith Jones Hendre 3 3 12 6
Robert Jones Do 1 13 0
1812
Penarran
Griffith Jones Hendre 3 3 13 0
Robert Jones Do - - - -
1815-1816
Penarran
Griffith Jones Hendre 2 3 10 0
Robert Jones Do - - - -
I would be grateful if a Tithe expert could explain to me what the numbers under the column Bl? mean.
I always thought that Tithe payments were proportional to the farm acreage .
There were two Hendres in the 1851 Llanuwchllyn census -
Hendre Mawr 38 acres.
Hendre Bach 10 acres.
Many thanks,
Elfed Owen.

Hi Trevor
Here are the Post Office/Postal Employees (counterstaff/telegraph boy/messenger boy) in Corwen in 1901 - I have included all ages as so many of the ages on the census records were incorrect. If you would like the other members of the households of any of these, please let us know. The year column is only an estimated year of birth that I use for sorting purposes.

Dear All,
Multiple apologies, both for the cross-posting(s) and for the
out-of-area request, but I'se desperate to track down my maternal
grandparents. They were North Walians; married in Manchester; his
parents lived in London & Kent, so there is a connection to all the
lists, in my defence.
Yet again, I'm looking for a(n) SKS who lives in the Ramsgate area, and
who is prepared to do a very specific lookup in newspapers covering
Ramsgate in July & August 1913. I would like all details of any
advertisement for "La Poupee", a light opera (or operetta), especially
the name of the company performing said work. Any info. on where the
company had come from, or where they were going to, would be a real
bonus.
Any quid pro quo in my neck of the woods willingly undertaken, if at all
possible.
TIA,
Trevor (York,UK)

Dear Rhiannon,
At this stage it was guesswork based on my assumption
that Elizabeth was born in 1796 and two other factors. William and Elizabeth's
first child Hugh was christened at Dolgellau on 21st, March, 1821 before a
William Jones married an Elizabeth Roberts in Festiniog on 14th, April, 1821. I
thought that she probably had relatives in Dolgellau and went there to give
birth. Then I found that an Elizabeth Roberts was christened at Dolgellau so I put
two and two together and got five.
I am not certain whether I have the right William or
Elizabeth. My two best bets for William were for one christened in Trawsfynydd on
29th May, 1791 and another at Maentwrog on the 2nd, February, 1800. I looked at
the offspring of these unions and was not happy because there was no Hugh.
Iwas looking into a William christened at Maentwrog on 6th, April, 1798 son of
John Hugh and Ann.
My g grandfather was a Hugh Gwilym Jones born in Ffestiniog
in 1859 so Iam excited by your research.
My grandmother was an Ellin Roberts born in Maentwrog in
1869. She had two sisters Elizabeth and Sarah. I started going out with a Spanish
girl pen-friend of mine in Madrid when I could get away from university in
Madrid. Sehe was the love of my life and we eventually married -but that is a
different story. My grandmother was dead. I know nothing of Betty in Ffestiniog
but my father went to visit his auntie Sarah in Coedpoeth, near Wrexham where
we lived. She was blind and in her eighties. He casually mentioned my Spanish
girlfriend and she told him a remarkable story that she had a grandfather,g or
gg grandfather who was a Spanish ships-captain. He had been shipwrecked,
settled in North Wales and married a Welsh girl. Iam trying to prove or disprove
this but haven't got there yet. I think of Ffestiniog and the rail-link
exporting slate from Portmadoc.
I have certificates for all of my immediate relatives from 1859
if you need details.
Iam trying to find details for Margaret,s husband EVAN ROBERTS. All I know of
him is that he was born in Penmachno in 1836 and that his father was Thomas
Roberts.
All the best, Phil Jones from Chester.

Unfortunately members of the public are unable to check the actual
certificate, only the registrar may do that.
The Registrar for Dolgellau is Dylan N Jones, e-mail:
dylannjones(a)gwynedd.gov.uk
However as Llanfihangel y Traethau is in the Ffestiniog registration
district, it is unlikely that your grandfather's birth would be registered in
Dolgellau.
The work of recording, copying and transcribing the records for the
Ffestiniog registration office as not yet began due to a shortage of volunteers. If any
member should like to find out what is involved in volunteering to help with
this project contact Dafydd Heys on:

Do you have a particular reason to think that the wife of William Jones
Penybont, Maentwrog, is Elizabeth Roberts of Dolgellau?
There may be more than one William Jones of Penybont, Maentwrog, but I had
thought his wife was Elizabeth Pugh, daughter of Humphrey Pugh and
granddaughter of Hugh Humphrey of Tafarn Helyg - she would be the cousin of
Elizabeth Richard mentioned on the Caernarfonshire list last week and also a
cousin of my gggg mother.
The will of Edmund Humphrey December 1821 (half-brother of Humphrey Pugh)
mentions William Jones Gellidowyll (sic) and his wife Elizabeth and their
son Hugh (all the other people mentioned are nearly related). The will of
Hugh Humphrey (her potential grandfather) in January 1822 talks of his
granddaughter Elizabeth Pugh wife of William Jones, though no place name is
given. The will of Richard Humphreys September 1840 (a full brother of
Humphrey Pugh) mentions William Jones of Penybont together with other near
relatives, including his own brother Humphrey Pughe. AWilliam Jones turns up
quite a lot as a witness to family documents and events eg as a witness to
the will of Ellis Richard Sept 1843 (brother in law of Humphrey Pugh). I
have taken this to be the same William Jones each time though at the moment
can't find in my notes the piece of evidence that I had thought completely
tied them together. In Gellidywyll by 1841 is John and Susanah Owen, so the
one above has definitely moved by then. I have a pencil note of potential
children to this Elizabeth and William, other than Hugh above, two
Catherines and a Robert but their baptism dates are earlier than your
Margaret and I don't think they can be right for this Elizabeth, bearing in
mind the ages of her cousins' children - maybe there are two couples of the
same name moving around the parish at slightly different times eg William
Jones who married Elizabeth Jones in 1802? I have noted that there were also
men called William Jones in the 1841 census at Cynfal Fawr, Llwynteg and
Pwllyci at least in the parish. I will have to check further.
I haven't found the baptism of Elizabeth Pugh although her brother Hugh is
baptised in Maentwrog in 1795 the son of Humphrey Hugh and Sarah Richard,
who were married in Maentwrog November 1790 (the surnames of this family
varied widely in this generation). There is also a daughter named Catherine
baptised 1791. I think Humphrey Pugh may have lived outside the parish for
some time. Neither have I found a marriage of my Elizabeth Pugh and William
Jones.
Does any of this ring any bells?
Rhian

On the new "northwalesbmd website" I found a Griffith Roberts
born 1837. subdistrict: Barmouth. Record at Dolgellau, Ref BRM/1/44.
I would appreciate it if someone would check this to see if he was
the son of Griffith Roberts and Mary. They were married and lived in
the area of Llanfihangel y Traethau parish.
I would like to send for this birth certificate if it is the right
one. He is my g grandfather
In Memory of Lance Corporal Bertie James Clack RWF & MGC.
My grandfather came from Wiltshire to work at Rûg near Corwen as a young gardener. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers. In 1915 he joined the Machine Gun Corps. Like so many who joined the Machine Gun Corps he was killed in action leading his gun team at Quenchettes Woods, near Ronssoy in France on Saturday, 21st September 1918. He lies at peace in the Unicorn Cemetery, Vend'huille, Aisne.
Some 170,500 officers and men served in the M.G.C with 62,049 becoming casualties including 12,498 being killed. Two years ago after visiting the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site, we visited his grave for the first time and what an emotional reunion.
He is remembered at Corwen Parish Church Armistice Service every year and his name is inscribed on a tablet inside the church and again on the gates of the Memorial Park at Corwen. He is also remembered at St John's Church, Devizes.
We write this to his memory and am so glad that I was able to visit his grave - something that my dear father had always wished to do.

Hello again Trevor,
If your grandmother's young man left school and went to work in the Post
office straight away in the late 1890's, would a trawl of the 1901 census for
Corwen looking for all Post men, telegraph boys and other communications workers
aged under 25, help narrow the field?
