Hello Everyone,
I would be grateful if anyone with access to the 1851 census for Llanfachreth
could check if there is a Jones family living at Drwsynant please.
I have found an entry in the 1841 census (HO107/1431 f 5 p1
Llanfachreth-Nannau)
for William JONES aged 80 and his wife Lowry plus 3 other Jones's - Howel 30,
Anne 25 and Elizabeth 20. William is given as a publican, and all are born
Merioneth. I think this may be my gt gt gt grandparents and possibly the
siblings of my gt grandfather. Since the relationship between the Jones's is not
specified it is difficult to know whether this is so.
I would like to know whether any of the family is at the same place in 1851,
as I have not been able to find the birth or baptism records for my great
great grandfather, also William Jones. This name confusingly seems to be passed
down as the name of the first born male in each generation.
Any help with this would be most gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Tricia Heseltine

Reminds me of the Rogers and Hart song "Have You Met Miss Jones?". In North

Is there such a place as PANTYNEUADD, LLANYCILIN or is it a misprint for LLANYCIL MEIRIONYDD ?
A distant relative of mine thinks that JANE EVANS, a daughter of the late sister of David Roberts, Gwynfryn, Trawsfynydd (1778 - 1856) lived at the above address.
I have found no trace of it and wonder if it is a misprint for Llanycil.I shall be pleased if anybody can throw any light on the matter.

There is a Pant y Neuadd in Parc y Bala (Post Code LL23 7YT) I'm not sure
which parish Parc is in, it may be Llanycil or it may be Llanuwchllyn. (Llanyclin
sounds to me like an English attempt at spelling Llanuwchllyn)

Hello
I have just subscribed to this list in the hope someone can tell me if there was an Army Barracks in Bala around 1860.My GGG Aunt was born & married in Reading, Berks, had her first child in Gibraltar and then two in Bala. On the latter children's birth certificate their father's occupation is listed as Pensioner. I have not found his age but wondered if he would have been in the Army for them to have moved around so much.
Many thanks
Margaret

Dear John and Doreen
You very kindly looked-up Edward Jones for me in the 1941 census for
Llandrillo yn Edeirnon about two years ago. I still haven't found him! I
believe that you have the also 1941 and 1951 for Llanycil and Llangower? If
so, if and when you have an opportunity, would you be so kind as to look him
up? He was born around 1840 and his father was also Edward according to his
marriage certificate (although I'm dubious of this by now).
Diolch yn fawr/many thanks

As you have all probably worked out the computer that sends out the mail to
the Caernarfonshire, Gwynedd and Merioneth lists has been out of action for the
past week. The problem has now been resolved so things should get back to
normal soon.
Rootsweb has informed subscribers that:
"Mail will be processed from the queued mail concurrently with incoming mail.
This will mean that not all mail will arrive chronologically until the
backlog in the queue has been
cleared. It will probably take the better part of the day to get mail from
the
queues to processing and then depending on the traffic to your ISP further
time
to get delivered."
So please don't repeat messages that you sent earlier in the week if they
don't turn up straight away — leave it for a day or two.
Regards
Alwyn
Hello fellow Merioneth Listers
Please forgive this mailing but whilst I am receiving other mail without any apparent trouble the contact with Gwynedd, Merionethshire, and Clwyd seems to have dried up. I have checked the following sites
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/WLS-GWYNEDDhttp://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/clwydhttp://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/WLS-MERIONETHSHIRE
for very recent mail but there is none to find for Gwynedd after 8 Oct 2003, Merioneth after 7 October 2003, Clwyd after 9 October 2003.
Is there a fault with me or have operations been suspended. I really miss these sites for information and help.

I am seeking any information on this family.
After a period of adding very little to my site over the summer holidays I
have started transcribing some bits again. The latest addition being the 1851

I'm not sure from your message what you are looking for precisely but if you
are getting down towards Furnace and Eglwys-Fach then you are in north
Ceredigion, well south of Merioneth. Quite close to the parish of
Llangynfelyn, in fact, which has loads of stuff on-line.

Reg Davies' Welsh mariners' site might also be of interest to you.

Alwyn, thanks so much for your quick reply. You have been such a great help on this and other questions.
I have written about the marriage certificate. I have not had the time I would like to keep pursuing family roots. I got into this again, because this weekend I hope to find the cemetery in Iowa County, Wisconsin where many of my uncle's family - Williams - are buried. The first Williams' arrived in Wisconsin from Wales in the 1840's. The Jones family that produced Frank Lloyd Wright lived near-by outside of Spring Green. It must have been a good time, but a hard life, for the Welsh in Wisconsin.
Thanks again for your help,
Chris Jones, Wheaton, Illinois

Having looked at this family tree it appears to have been created by an individual with little knowledge of Wales using the IGI rather than original sources. Because the IGI coverage of Wales is fairly sparse and because Welsh people use a much smaller variety of names than the people of other countries, then using the IGI without backup from varying other sources very rarely works in Welsh family history.
However most of the individual facts on the IGI are usually correct, it is just the way that the facts have been joined together, by some individuals, to make pedigrees that is inaccurate. So the chance is that a Richard Trevor Jones did marry an Alice Louisa Evans in Dolgellau at the Baptist chapel on June 28, 1878 and a Richard Trevor Jones was born at Pyle and Kenfig on 24 Jan 1858.
What is questionable is whether or not these are one and the same person or two individuals with a common Welsh name.
The 1881 Census suggests that they are not the same person as Alice's Richard Claims to have been born in Dolgellau:
Upper Field St Richard Trevor JONES Head Married Male 34, (occupation) House Painter (born) Dolgelley
Alice JONES Wife Married Female 23 (born) Dolgelley
Goronwy Ap.Trevor JONES Son Male 1 (born) Dolgelley
A marriage certificate will be available for Richard & Alice's marriage. The information that it will contain is Date of place of marriage, names of both parties, where they were living at the time of the marriage, their ages (unfortunately this is sometimes just recorded as "full age" – i.e. over 21), the names and occupation of the bride & groom's fathers.
For details about the marriage certificate e-mail Dylan Jones the superintendent registrar at Dolgellau:
dylannjones(a)gwynedd.gov.uk
who will probably send you details of the certificate contents and will be able to inform you of the best way of obtaining a copy of the certificate

The LDS site shows that on June 28, 1878, Richard Trevor Jones married Alice Louisa Evans in Dolgellau at a Baptist chapel. Can this be confirmed by records in Wales?
If there is a marriage certificate in the records, would it show a birthdate for Richard? Richard's parents are not shown correctly on the LDS site, so I'm wondering if the Jan. 24, 1858 birthdate shown is also wrong.
Thanks for any help that you can give, Chris Jones, Wheaton, Illinois
