Dear Alwyn
My interest centres on the Edwards family of Tyn y Graig, Llandrillo. Despite
years of trying I have only recently established my descent from them, via
the 1901 census. In it my Edwards gt-grandmother, after being rather
imprecise in earlier censuses, finally pinpointed her place of birth as
Mostyn, Flintshire.
From that I confirmed her baptism, which by great good fortune was at the
local Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (Llanerch y Mor). The luck was in the CMs'
requirement that parents should include their own place of origin in the
register. The father, Edward Edwards, indicated his was Llandrillo. He also
specified Llandrillo in the baptismal entry of an earlier child at Salem
Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Dolgellau.
Edward Edwards had served as a Coldstream guardsman in the Peninsular War and
his discharge certificate in 1821 states that he was born "near Bala". The
actual village given is Llangidern, which does not exist. You kindly found
for me a place with a similar name (from memory it was in Carmarthen), but in
the 1851 census Edwards said he was from Merionethshire and I am satisfied
from all the evidence that he was born at Tyn y Graig, Llandrillo, in 1785,
son of Hugh and Hester Edwards.
Last week I received from The National Library of Wales a copy of Hugh
Edwards's will of 1827. He was a yeoman, leaving "less than £100", of which
my g-g-grandfather Edward's share was the princely sum of five shillings. He
had a miliary pension of seven pence a day so perhaps his father thought he
was well looked after!
I am full of anticipation at the prospect of my first visit to Llandrillo in
three weeks or so. My wife and I will be visiting a cousin (unrelated to the
Edwardses) at Nantmor, near Beddgelert, on July 11. From there it will be an
easy run to the ancestral spot. I have a powerful sense of place and it will
be an emotional moment for me.
James Hogg (Cambridgeshire, UK)
At one time, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area had several active coal mines, all in operation at once (at least according to the papers I've been reading). However, over time the mines closed due to a number of reasons including the Susquehanna River flooding some of the tunnels as well as the towns. I'm sure a social-historian could give you a better reason for the large number of Welsh émigrés, but that's the only one I know of - mainly because that's were the majority of my ancestors worked.
I keep hoping that somebody will find a lost uncle who went to America and was never heard from again!
Nancy

Hello Nancy
Firstly, thank you for your work in transcribing all these obits. The huge
collection of them now published in the Wales-Gen archive makes a valuable
addition to on-line Welsh genealogy resources.
I am intrigued to know, however, why so many Welsh people seem to have chosen
Wilkes-Barre (PA) as a place of emigration.

Greetings
I am delighted to find someone with links to Hendre Fawr.My grandmother was
Morris Williams (junior)'s sister and my mother used to talk about him a
lot. He (Dewyrth Morris) and Modryb Marged lived in Tynllyn Farm,
Trawsfynydd. My mother refers to them in her book "Hen Bethau
Anghofiedig".They had no issue and were the favourite relatives of all the
children of the neighbourhood. All three sons of Hendre Fawr -Lewis, Morris
and John had no issue and I wonder if your links may be through their
sisters. They lived on the farms Cae Gwyn, Bryn Teg, Adwy Deg and Tyddyn Bach
in Trawsfynydd and with Modryb Sarah (with sons Morrus Lloyd and Bob) in
Dolgellau and Modryb Mary in Brongraig, Festiniog.
Morris Williams (senior) married Elizabeth, the daughter of Morris Lloyd and
Ann Humphreys of Cefngellcum , Trawsfynydd and they moved from Wyddor to
start their married life in Hendre Fawr. Evan Williams moved from Wyddor to
Hendre Fawr when his wife died.If you can give me more details of your
great-grandfather's movements we might be able to find the missing links.
Another possibility could be that it is Morris Williams who lived in Llain
Wen Trawsfynydd is the person you are looking for. He subsequently moved
from Llain Wen to Darn Gau at the top end of Cwm Prysor towards Bala. Both
of these were very similar local personalities noted for their friendly
nature and humour.
Regards
Gruff Rowlands.

Hi Tom, Thanks for this. This is what I have in the notes given to me:
? THOMAS
|
Cadwalder THOMAS m Margaret (they had four boys, five girls but only know
the name of Dr. William Cadwallader THOMAS)
Cadwallader THOMAS b. 1830 according to the notes
- but
found a Cadwallader THOMAS born of a Cadr THOMAS and Margaret CADR with
8 DEC 1822, Llanycil, Merionethshire, North Wales, at Llidiardau
Calvinistic Methodist. Of course, I don't know at this time if this is
the right person or not but if it is then I will have found who my
ggrandparents are.
At this time there is just names with some dates but no birth places. I
believe that the majority of my ancestors lived from
Bala/Llanuwchllyn/Llangynog/Pennant Melangell/Llanfyllin areas. The
Griffiths are from Pembrokeshire area.
I apologize for the sketchy information. Any help or guidance would be
appreciated.

Hi Alwyn and List.
Sorry it's a bit late but I'm still catching up with my email after a short
break. Great idea by the way Alwyn. Normally a watcher myself apart from the
increasingly rare occaisions when I can kick-start myself into genealogy
mode and out of every other mode that seems to take precedence these days.
For what it's worth here are mine, so far...
My Taid was John Jones, born 1894 Tanygrisiau, Blaenau. His father, David
was born in Co Wicklow, Ireland in 1867 and married Mary Griffiths in
Bowydd Methodist Chapel, Blaenau in 1889. David's parents were John Jones
and Anne Roberts, both from the Bangor area but yet to be proved. David &
Mary had 4 other children, Sarah Ann, Alun, Mair and Jane. David had a
brother Robert and sister Margaret.
Mary Griffiths's parents were Allen Griffiths and Ann Swancoat originally
from Llangynog, Montgomeryshire. They were married in the parish church
Llangynog in 1861. Allen was killed in an accident in Cwmorthin quarry,
Blaenau in 1888. In 1881 they were living at 3 Tanygrisiau Terrace,
Festiniog with their other children Griffith(19), William(17),
Elizabeth(14)and Allen(7). All their children were born in Llangynog apart
from Elizabeth who was born in Festiniog.
I'm sure I must have missed something but that's enough rambling for now.
All the best,
Rod

Subject: [MER] Merioneth list census
There are currently 148 members of the Merioneth list, but in the last 3
months only 36 members have written to the list (less than a quarter).
The area that most list traffic deals with is Trawsfynydd. The second most
"popular" area is Dolgellau/Barmouth (but I'm responsible for most of that -
so maybe it doesn't count)
I would be interested to know what the interests of the 112 members who
haven't written to the list in the past three months are (and to be reminded
of the interests of the others).
So I am asking for a "list census", expecting 148 replies!!! :-)
Can all list members send a reminder to the list of who they are and which
general area of the world they live in (no home addresses, for safety sake,
please).
What part(s) of Merionethshire their interests lie in.
And a few details of the Merionethshire familles they are trying to find.
(Details with a bit of "meat" on please. Looking for the surname "Stockford
in Oxford" works, but looking for the surname "Jones in Bala" doesn't (at
30%
Bala has the highest concentration of Jonses in the world))
Looking forward to a very full inbox!! :-)

Hello!
Thanks for all the responses. Especially to Alwyn. I really should learn
a smattering of Welsh! This would make place names a bit easier to
locate perhaps!
I knew Dolgledr covered the area of modern Penmaenpool and 'lower house
by the lake' fits with everything I know about John DAVIES. He died in
1870 at a house called Minnffordd, which is a bit farther down the road
towards Abergwynant and is still marked on modern(ish) maps. The legend,
passed to me by my 88 year old aunt, is that John was a ferry man put
out of work by the building of 'the bridge'. I presume the road bridge
at Penmaenpool, though I don't know when it was built. The railway
bridge at the mouth of the estuary was opened in the 1860's I think.
Unfortunately I only have the 1861 census to go on. I havn't found John
in 1841 or 1851, but will be at the Dolgellau Record Office on Thursday
looking! John is always referred to as 'labourer' in the records I have
located.
There is a possible candidate for his fatherin law, Edward PUGH,
however, on the 1851 census at:
HO 107 Piece 345 Page 11 Pandy y Odin Pauper, boatman
The age is about right and the wife's details match what I know, but
Edward started off as a taylor and so would have had to make the
transition to retired/unemployed boatman! The same problem arises: where
is Pandy y Odin or what does it mean?
Thanks again
Regards
Chris Watson
Hello Chris
It should be Ty'n Llyn is (is - lower Ty'n Llyn - House by the Lake,). This
name no longer exists according to the Wales Postal Address Book. From
looking at the neighbours in the 1881 & 1891 census returns, it appears to
have been in the Hamlet of Penmaenpool, close to the George III Hotel.
Hi Chris
Goto http://www.ordsvy.gov.uk/products_new/Landranger/index.cfm
then start off with the "Dolg" which is the largest part of the name it can locate and see which
places seem correct to you.
Good luck and best wishes

Alwyn, can you give me any reliable information as to where researchers into
the Edeyrnion area should direct their queries? Should it be Clwyd, Powys or
Merionethshire? In my case the search is complicated somewhat by the fact
that some of my antecedents may have lived in the Llanfor parish but
worshipped, were christened or were buried at Betws Gwerful Goch. I ask this
question knowing that the lists are supposed to refer to pre 1974
reorganisation (this means Merioneth) but many see Edeyrnion (Betws Gwerful
Goch, Corwen, Gwyddelwern, Llandrillo, Llangar, Llansanffraif Glyndyfrdwy)
as part of Clwyd/Denbighshire (post reorganisation).
I have the Price line going back unbroken to the latter half of the 18thC

The Vaughan Evans back to 1827 in Llanelidan
The Roberts back to the latter half of the 18thC in an area of Corwen Parish

I cannot thank you enough for the information you have just sent to me
