If you go to the All Wales Lookup exchange page
Wales Lookup
You will find researchers willing to do lookups in a book called:
Nonconformist Registers of Wales by Dafydd Ifans
But, please note this book does not contain transcriptions of the chapel
records but it will tell you where the registers and records of individual
chapels are held (if the ones that you want have survived)

Hi from Colorado,
Is there anyone who could give me some direction as to how I can locate
Chapel records for Llanfor, Llandderfel, Llangower and Llanycil. I have
looked at the films that the Mormons have, but can find nothing.
I'm hoping that there may be more records than those available through the
films.

The nearest that I can find in the Merioneth Marriage Index is this one in
Llanycil, which looks quite promising:
7th July 1778 Robert Evans Single of Llangywer Married Jane Lewis single of
Llanycil by Licence.
The Licence is preserved in the National Library:
St Asaph 1751-1800 Number 95/3.
LEWIS, Jane, sp., Llanycil, MER. 1778, Jul 5. At Llanycil. Robert Evans .

The office used for registering BMDs for Tywyn use to be Machynlleth up to
1946:
11 Penrallt Street, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 8AG, Tel +44 (0)1654 702335/6
It is now Dolgellau:
Gwynedd Council Offices Cae Penarlag Dolgellau Gwynedd LL40 2YB Tel +44
(0)1341 422341
However some of the pre 1946 Merionethshire records from the Machynlleth
Office were moved to the Dolgellau office in 1974, so Dolgellau would be the
best place to check first.
I am looking for the marriage record of -
Robert Evans and Jane (orSian) Lewis.
Their daughter , Margaret was baptised in Llangower Parish Church on March 5, 1780
I would be grateful for any help.

However about 3/4 of the Barmouth 1901 census is now on-line, at

NONE of the A-Z INDEX links are yet active, so please ignore them!
My new target date for completing the Barmouth 1901 Transcription (With a

Sorry for the delay to all Barmouth researchers.

In the Merioneth Marriage Index there is a record of the union between David
THOMAS and Mary JONES 19.10.1822.
The name John can be translated into Welsh as either IOAN (giving JONES) or
IEUAN (giving EVANS) - in their Latin form there is only one vowel difference
between Evans and Jones, so both can be interchangeable. Having tried to
transcribe may PRs, I can also say that Evans and Jones, in scruffy
handwriting, are difficult to distinguish, despite their differences in
typescript English. So I am almost certain that the above is the union that
you are looking for.
An SAE and a small payment to Gwynedd Archives, Penarlag, Dolgellau, should
secure a photocopy from the Llanuwchllyn records of the above marriage
I'm still looking for possibilities for your other request, and will reply
shortly.

Hi Everyone, I've just been told by a relative that a first name used in our
family three or four times, i.e. Harriott, was in fact the surname of an
ancestor. I looked in Familysearch.com and indeed found a great many
variations of the name. My question is: Is this a Welsh name? thanks a
lot, patricia davies in pennsylvania, usa.

know that there are a number of Trawsfynydd researchers on this list, I hope
one of you might be able to help me with a connection.
I have details from a grave stone in St Madryn's Parish Church in memory of
Ann Daughter of Ellis Humphreys & Elizabeth Coed-y-Cae-Du (so, a great Aunt
of Hedd Wyn) and Wife of Robert Pugh formerly of Bryncrwn.
Ann died July 10th 1881 aged 60.
My four x Great Grand Mother Jonett Hugh was also of Bryncrwn Trawsfynydd,
and the children of some of her brothers adopted the surname Pugh.
So it is likely that Robert and Jonett are related, but I can't work out how.
Is anybody else researching the Hugh / Hughes / Pugh family of Bryncrwn, or
the Coed Cae Du family who knows who Robert Pugh's parents were. The Hughes'
of Tyddyn Sais are also the same family.

Alwyn

Hi Ken
How silly can I be! I've only just noticed your surname from the message about
collecting callenig.
How far back do you have your RICHARD(S) family in Towyn? My 2x gt-grandmother,
Jane RICHARDS, was born in Towyn in 1807, but I haven't got back beyond her
parents. I've never found anybody researching RICHARDS in Towyn.
Kind regards

The ditty I remember when we were going round collecting was:
"Yng nghlennig i, yng nghlennig i, a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i chwi"
We were only allowed to ask for 'calennig' at our family or friends houses and on finishing that round we were off to the High Street (Porthmadog) and various shops and banks would throw either fruit or pennies out on to the street from an upper window. You can imagine the scramble! As Roger states 'calennig' finished at 12noon. Those were the days.

Thank you very much those who replied to my query. Huh! It says a lot for
todays `older generation` doesn`t it when you all know where the pub is but
don`t know where my Thomas is :-)
