Dear Jeff,
I don't know much more than I posted.
Hannah Hughes (b.8 Sept. 1881 in Mona Terrace, Amlwch, Ang., d. 2 Aug.
1952 in Chester, Eng.)
The parents (Geo. M. Hughes & wife Mary Jane) and children moved from
Amlwch to Liverpool in about 1902.
Hannah married Alfred Butler 15 June 1903, I think in Liverpool. They
moved to Chester.
There was only one child of this marriage--Claude Butler, who had a
daughter named Jean (who married someone and had one child).
The story repeated in my family is that Alfred Butler left Hannah, who
immediately "took to her bed." I guess that means a type of nervous
breakdown. I don't know when this occurred. I presume that Claude
stayed with his mother in Chester, but I really don't know that for sure.
I have the impression that Alfred Butler had another female interest.
Sorry, but I don't know anything more about Alfred Butler, but I would
suspect that his date of birth would have been about the same as Hannah.
From my reading, I know that there was a large Welsh community in
Liverpool around 1900-1915. It is possible that Alfred Butler was a part
of that--the Hughes family attended the Independent Congregationalist
(Welsh-speaking) chapel in Kensington in Liverpool. Hannah's father
(Geo. Morgan Hughes) was a proud Welshman and very active in the chapel.
For that reason, I suspect Alfred Butler had some sort of Welsh tie. On
the other hand, a sister of Geo. M. Hughes--Ellen Hughes--married___
Lewis (a Chester chemist) and their daughter (Mary Anna Lewis) was
married in 1879 to a W.A.M. Nicholls, who was involved in tobacco
manufacturing in Chester. The Hughes family had been involved in tobacco
mfg. in Amlwch and perhaps there was a business tie to Chester that I
don't know about.
