JOHN HUGHES (1758-1845) - Captain of the Brig "Agnes" sailing out of
Amlwch,Anglesey, Wales. He was married to ELLEN PAYNTER (1766-1849),
who died in Amlwch of cholera.
Her father was WILLIAM PAYNER, one of four Paynter brothers who came
from Redruth, Cornwall.
One son of John & Ellen Paynter Hughes was also a JOHN HUGHES
(1800-1861/71), a master mariner like his father and then a draper in
Amlwch and married to ANNE MORGAN (1798-1875); her parents were WILIAM
EDWARD MORGAN (1768-1844, ships chandler) and MARY PARRY of Llanpatrick,
ANG.
John and Anne Morgan Hughes were the parents of GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES
(1840Amlwch-1916Liverpool).

In Amlwch, GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES was employed in the Tobacco firm of his
elder brother EDWARD MORGAN HUGHES (E. Morgan Hughes Tobacco) in Amlwch.
When Edward Morgan Hughes died around 1900, he wanted George to stay on
as manager of the family business. However, there was some family
dispute and I think that is what caused George and his family to leave
Amlwch and go to Liverpool to set up business. Also the Parys Mountain
Copper Mine was almost phased out of business and I think that hurt the
economic interests in Amlwch because the miners lost work.
Around the turn of the century (1902), my ggrandfather GEORGE MORGAN
HUGHES and his entire family left Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, to go to
Liverpool,
where he became a tobacco merchant (as he had been in Amlwch, plus being
in the insurance business) and then a "removal contractor;" I think
that means he moved furniture, but not sure. Their home was in
Kensington, Liverpool, and they attended the Kensington
Congregationalist Chapel (probably the Welsh-speaking one) in Liverpool.
He had been a choir director in the Congregationalist/Independent chapel
in Amlwch before this move to Liverpool.
GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES (1840Amlwch-1916Liverpool) and his wife MARY JANE
(WILLIAMS) (1852Liverpool-1905Liverpool) had numerous children born in
Amlwch, all
of whom went to Liverpool with their parents and married there. His
parents were JOHN and ANNE (nee Morgan) HUGHES; and her parents were
Master Mariner JOHN and MARY (nee JONES) WILLIAMS; her step-mother was
MARY (nee
GRIFFITH) WILLIAMS of Amlwch. Capt. John Williams died sometime between
the 1871 and 1881 census, I think with the loss of the ship Truant in
Oct. 1874, but I am not sure this is my John Williams.
