I use Legacy - a free download - which I find very good.

Legacy is a good programme, but the charting options that Brian wanted have
to be paid for as additional extras.
The free bit is available from
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
Most paid for programmes offer the ability to produce ancestral charts or
descendant charts, with or without boxes.
The programme with the most charting options is probably Generations Grande
Suite, which is available in UK and US editions. More details are available
here:

Master Genealogist Gold, is another programme which has received very good
reviews. Website

I use Family Origins for the simple reason that I had version 4 given to me
some 6 years ago, and I have kept upgrading the programme with which I have
become most familiar, however FO's charting options are not very variable.

I am only aware of two programmes which offer the ability to draw complicated
trees containing co-lateral as well as main lines. I have tried both and have
found the results very unsatisfactory.
One is Legacy Tree Draw, which is a $30 add on to he free legacy programme,
the other is GenPro, which is available to download free from
http://www.genopro.com/
However to use GenPro, you must, also have a programme which enables you to
produce Gedcom files.
Hope this of some help.
