Dear Brian,
Have you looked at the 1851 & 1861 Amlwch census on
www.amlwchdata.co.uk
?
I too have a JOHN WILLIAMS (birth date and place unknown, but probably
Amlwch around the same time as your John Williams). My John Williams
married a Mary JONES (b.abt. 1832 if she was 20 years old when her
first/only child was b. in 1852). Since my Mary Jane Williams was b. in
May 1852, I suspect the marriage was in early 1851. She must have died
shortly after the birth of Mary Jane, because by the 1861 Amlwch census,
John Williams had a new wife (Mary Griffiths) in Amlwch. Then John and
Mary Griffith Williams had more children, not a Richard among them.
CENSUS MATERIAL (JOHN WILLIAMS WAS ALWAYS AT SEA ON CENSUS DAY):
1861
"Waterman's Arms" (house/inn/public house?--no indication of which at
that time)
Lower Quay St.
WILLIAMS, MARY - wife, married, age 34 (so b. 1827-8), Master Mariner's
Wife, born in Amlwch
WILLIAMS, MARY JANE - daughter, age 8 (so b. 1852-3), scholar, b. Amlwch
GRIFFITH, CATHERINE - Servant, Unm'd, age 22, house servant, b. Amlwch
(In 1861 Amlwch Census, Geo. Morgan Hughes and his brother Edward M.
Hughes were living on Chapel St. and had an unmarried housekeeper MARY
WILLIAMS, age 35)
1871 Amlwch Census Report
Chapel St. (no house number given)
WILLIAMS, MARY - age 44 (b.1827-8), Master Mariner's Wife, b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, JOHN G. - son age 7, b. Amlwch (b.1864 when mother 37)
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM - son age 5, b. Amlwch (b.1866 when mother 39)
WILLIAMS, THOMAS R. - son age 2, b. Amlwch (b.1869 when mother 42)
(*Mary Jane Williams is not living at home--employed or school? Would be
19 yrs old)
(*I had found a MARY WILLIAMS - age 18 - general servant to ROBERT
ROBERTS living in Llaneilian [near Amlwch, I think] - next door is a JANE
WILLIAMS, age 80 pauper. This may or may not be our Mary Jane Williams,
who seems to have used "Mary Jane" consistently)
1881 Amlwch Census Report
20 Llaneilian Rd., Amlwch
WILLIAMS, MARY - age 53 - widow head of household - b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM - son age 14 - joiner - b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, THOMAS R. - son age 12 - scholar - b. Amlwch
GRIFFITH, EVAN - brother age 55 - unm'd - sailor - b. Amlwch
(Thus GRIFFITH is probably the maiden name of MARY WILLIAMS)
It appears that husband (John Williams) had died between 1871 and 1881)
JOHN WILLIAMS was a master mariner who disappeared between the 1871 &
1881 census. There was a ship named the Truant which was lost at sea in
Oct. 1874; he owned/mastered the ship. I think perhaps this is my John
Williams, but can't find more informtion on this tragedy or the ship.
Do any of these names ring a bell? Thomas R. Williams could be a Thomas
Richard. We have some similar names, but these are common in Wales..
By the way, John Williams' only daughter was the above Mary Jane Williams
(b.Liverpool 1852, father a seaman). Mary Jane married GEORGE MORGAN
HUGHES in Amlwch in 1874--at that time it appears her father was alive
and a master mariner. The parents of G. M. Hughes were John and ANNE
MORGAN HUGHES; John Hughes had been a master mariner and when he retired
he was a draper in Amlwch.
