I have contacted the GRO at Southport about this and this is their reply:
"Hello Mr Railton
Thank you for your email which I have forwarded to my Manager as we need
to
investigate.
Our indexes are not yet available on-line, although we have given
permission to a volunteer project called FreeBMD to digitize the indexes
for free on-line access for those records over 100 years old. The
material
so far collected can be searched on-line. Up to date information on
coverage will be found at
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
We will be in touch with you again as soon as possible.
Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention."
I will post any further reply to the list.
