<I have contacted the GRO at Southport about this and this is their reply:
"Hello Mr Railton
Thank you for your email which I have forwarded to my Manager as we need
to investigate.
Our indexes are not yet available on-line, although we have given
permission to a volunteer project called FreeBMD to digitize the indexes
for free on-line access for those records over 100 years old.>
This certainly does seem a contradiction in terms as in FreeBMD`s website
page they state that ". The FreeBMD project only contains index information
for the period 1837-1901" but in the description of the records available to
view at
http://www.1837online.com they state the following:
`The indexes contained on this site are divided into two distinct areas:
From 1837 to 1983 all records are scanned pages of the indexes that
are found
at the Family Record Centre and also held on microfiche or microfilm by
some
libraries and family history organisations.
From 1984 to date, all the information is in a database format.`
So, Who are "Family Research Link" and how are they able to access records
that the GRO admit to not being available ??
Puzzled!
