The records of Penrhyn Quarries -including the wages books, are deposited
at Caernarfon R.O. - see
www.gov.uk/adrannau/addysg/archifau (or do a search
under 'Cyngor Gwynedd'/'Gwynedd Council', whilst the Penrhyn Estate
records
are at Dept. of Archives, University of Wales, Bangor - see
www.archives.hub.ac.uk
If you need to learn something of the background to the slate industry, see:
J.A. Lindsay, 'A History of the North Wales Industry' (1974) - a very sound
introduction to the subject.
A.H.Dodd, 'The Industrial Revolution in North Wales' (3rd ed.1971)- a
masterly overview by a great scholar.
R.M. Jones, 'The North Wales Quarrymen 1874-1922' (1982) - a scholarly
account of the organisation of the quarrymen's union and the tensions
leading up to the Great Strike of 1900-03.
Good luck,
David Price, Bangor

Subject: [GWYNEDD] Records of Penyrhyn Quarries
Does anyone know if the records from Penyrhyn Quarries are available for
family research?
My ancestors were all slate quarry workers in Llanllechid and Tre-r-garth
and I think all the quarries in this region were owned by Lord Penyrhyn.
I am visiting my friends in Bethesda in November and plan to set aside four
days for family research so would like to be able to research their work
history if possible.
thanks for the help
