Dear Richard,
This is the total of what I know about the Robert Norman Roberts, first
of Amlwch Anglesey and then Liverpool.
CHILDREN OF GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES of Amlwch and Liverpool:
(1) JOHN HUGHES (1874-1951), m. Frances (Fanny) E. OWEN 3 July
1900Liverpool. One child - Frances May Hughes (b.1906?-d.1994), who m.
Robert Norman ROBERTS (he was also born in Amlwch and moved to Liverpool;
d. Wallasey--I think that is in Wiral?). John Hughes and his wife are
buried in Amlwch, but I don't know about May and Robert Norman Roberts.
Frankly, I think I have heard that they are buried in Amlwch also in the
same plot in the town cemetery. By this time, the Hughes family was
Independent or Congregationalist and not buried in St. Eleth's in Amlwch.
I have on occasion posted this same message on the internet about the
Roberts tie, but never got a response--perhaps I didn't put it in the
right place.
This is the entry from the 1881 census, and I did notice the Martha
Roberts living with the Hughes family. I just don't know the
relationship.

[I assume this is the Martha Roberts you referred to. ]
In the 1851 census, John and Ann Morgan Hughes were living on Queeen St.,
Amlwch, and their son George Morgan Hughes was just 11 years old. John
Hughes was now a draper, no longer a master mariner. With the family
was a MARGARET ROBERTS, unmarried servant, age 19. Missing from the
Hughes home on the day of the census were the Hughes sons, 20 year old
John Hughes and 18 year old William Hughes [perhaps they were out of town
or living elsewhere]. I didn't take down the information but I did note
that a Robert family (copper miner) lived next door. Closeby was the
timber perchant William Paynter and a corn merchant Jones.
The 1861 census shows that John and Ann Hughes were living on Queen St.
with their daughter Ann. Their neighbors were a Thos. Roberts 41 years,
stone mason, and his wife Ann 43.
The 1871 census showed my ancester G. M. Hughes living with his widowed
mother Ann on Queen St.[I didn't take down the neighbors this time.]
I did note that a relative of Ann Morgan Hughes was living on Market
Place at Ty Coch, #5748, pg.3
HUGHES, HANNAH (widow of a Richard Hughes, no relation to our Hughes as
far as I can tell--he had been a widower when he married Hannah Morgan
and apparently he has died by 1871. Living with Hannah was a MARGARET
ROBERTS 22 years and unmarried, a domestic servant b. Amlwch. This
Hannah Morgan Hughes was affiliated with the Morgan Tobacco Mfr.
establishment begun by her brother Edward Morgan(s), who never married
and died 1862.
I am sorry that I can't help you more. I you looked to see if the 1871
census index is on the
www.amlwchdata.co.uk web site? You might start
there.
Betty.

I am interested in the MARTHA ROBERTS that you have listed with your
family. I am researching a Martha Roberts (b.1834) nee HUGHES that
married a John ROBERTS (b.1834).
MARTHA ROBERTS (b.1866) would be just about the right age to be Martha
and John's daughter. Martha and John lived in Amlwch and had at least
three other children: Robert (b.1856), John (b.1857), and Shadrach
(b.1859). Since Martha is not a common Welsh name, I think the evidence
for the relationship is probably fairly strong. I will have to get the
1871 census to prove this relationship the next time I go to the Family
History Center. In the meantime, any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Richard Hughes
