Pals is clearly a mis-transcription of the Welsh word Plas (palace / large
house), having had a look at the different Griffiths families and the names
of their houses, the closest approximation I can find to Gnat is Garn near
Henllan in Denbighshire. See the Welsh Biography on-line:

Subject: [GWYNEDD] is Pals Gnat-Gwynedd?
Hello,
My name is Bob McClure, I live in St Petersburg, Florida, but it hardly
seems to matter these days when research can be contracted over there by
the internet.
I have a question. By any chance is Pals Gnat-Gwynedd?
I’ve researched the Griffith family of a Thomas (London mercer ca. 1566)
and sister Helene, without finding the two listed in any of the main
families.
I keep looking and thought I’d check out this quotation:
“a Hellene Griffith in Griffith family that lived at and owned Pals Gnat
on the eastern coast of Wales was one of the richest families in England.
That branch of the Griffith family had moved about that period of time to
South Wales”(1)
