Hello all,
I'm new to this list and hoping someone on this list or the Caernarfon list
can help me with Morris THOMAS.
He was born about 1817-18 in Caernarvon, parents Thomas MORRIS (1791-1858)
and Sioned ROBERTS (1794-1851). I've been told that Sioned would more than
likely be recorded as Jane. Morris died in 1888 (oral history, yet to be
proven). Morris was the second of nine children (oral history again, no
names known).
Morris THOMAS married Elinor JONES in 1839 in the Corwen registration
district. In 1841 they were living in Llangar, Merionethshire, and Morris
was not born in the county. In 1851 they were living in Gwyddelwern,
Merionethshire, and Morris gives his birthplace as Bryn Groes, Caern. I
haven't found him yet in 1871 but his wife was living in Llanynys, and in
1881 they were both living in Llanynys. In all found census records he is a
farmer.
My questions are:
What sort of a place is Bryn Groes - is it a village or a dwelling or
something else?
Why would a man born in Caernarvon go so far away? He settled around the
Corwen/Ruthin area (now Denbighshire) and stayed there.
Does anyone know of this family? Are there parish register transcriptions or
similar available? Apart from the census records, all I have is a vague tree
sent to an aunt in the 1970s, which has no exact dates, no locations and no
source info.
Any help or hints would be very much appreciated - I get very confused with
Welsh research!
