Have a problem with my GGfather! His name is William Jones and his father was John
Williams - what a combination.
I have census information for William showing him living in Llaniestyn most of his life -
his first wife I believe was Elinor and in 1841 they were living in Tan-y-foel. He was
shown as a farmer!!
In 1851 he was living in Cefn Madryn shown as an Ag Lab. He was also listed as birth place
Llanfair. His wife then was also Elinor but spelt Elleanor. In 1841 he had a son William
aged 1 and in 1851 a daughter Margaret aged 2 - born Ceidio. In 1861 he was living in
Bryntirion with his second wife Catherine who was supposed to be the sister of his first
wife. In this census, William is listed a born Nefyn. In 1871 they are living in Penrhos
and now William is listed as born Merioneth. In 1881 they are living in Penrhos and
William is listed as born Llanfair Merioneth.
I have checked Llanfair and can find no trace of William who was born 1810/11 according to
the ages listed and they seem consistent.
According to Williams marriage to Catherine 3/2/1855, his father John Williams was a
blacksmith and William was shown as a widower - William then was living in TyNewydd.
Not only can I not find details of Williams birth, but I also can't find any info on
his father John Williams. Because of the patronym, how would I go about looking further -
every parish record I've looked at shows the name of the baptism as say William son of
John Williams and his wife Mary or something. How would a baptism be listed if there was a
name change???
Any help/advice/guidance would be much appreciated.
regards
Geraint
