Dear list,
I am interested in Llewyn Bedw, near Graianog, in SW Llanwnda. It is in
what used to be called Dinlle(y). A Henry Rowlands (d1643) lived there and
had lands in Bodrydd, Aberdaron according to his 1643 will. I wonder
whether he may be the father of my Richard Parry of Caerhun and Bodrydd who
d in 1671.
In a document of 1583, Rowland ap William ap John, a free tenant of the
Queen in the villa of Dinlle (pa Llanwnda) is granted Lloyne Bedw in
perpetuity.
There are several Llewyn Bedws on the map but this one is, I am sure just NW
of modern Llanllyfni.
Anyway, two questions. First, does anyone have experience of using the PRO
Crown rentals and revenues documents held in class SC6? There seem to be
yearly returns of some sort of crown lands.
Second, does anyone know what relationship "free tenants of the Queen" might
have had to the people known as "Queen's farmers" for the various counties?
I assume that as Sir John Wynn of Gwidir was a "Queen's farmer" that this
was quite a high rank? Did he collect any dues from "free tenants"?
I would be grateful for any help!
Yours,
Ian Thompson
