Sandy,
Could the older Joseph have been a mariner away at sea at the time of the
census?
You might try searching for the older Joseph on this web site:
1881 SHIPS IN UK PORTS - CENSUS -WEB SITE
http://www.angelfire.com/de/BobSanders/81Intro.html
Gives census reports for the various ships in UK ports in 1881.
A new section of the site is now in progress. This will cover mariners at
various shore establishments eg Royal Navy Barracks, Training Schools &
Colleges, Seamen's Homes, Prisons etc.
You also might try the welsh mariners web site:
www.welshmariners.org (or .com)

Subject: Owens and Roberts
Hi List,
I have run into a brick wall and was wondering if anyone can help???
I found my great grandfather Joseph Owen on the 1881 census living with
grandmother Ellin Williams and her son and daughter John and Jane Roberts
in Llandeussant. Joseph's brother's William and Hugh are not there. So I
thought if I looked on the 1871 census that I would find the rest of the
family ( Joseph wasn't born until late 1871). But what I found was
William living in the same grandparents household and still no parents.
The father is Joseph Owen according to son Joseph's marriage cert. and
family - any search for an older Joseph has ended in frustration. I have
had thoughts on where he could be but then where is the mother if William
is with apparently her parents in 1871 - Joseph is soon to be born. I
have exhausted my grey matter on possibilities and was wondering if any
of you would have any ideas I hadn't thought of ???
Thanks,
Sandy
