I went through some of the local war memorials in this area but it is
difficult to identify many names. Here we tend to often have several Hugh
Cameron or James MacDonald and even had two brothers with the same name who
were killed on the same day (confused the Army Records Office!) - one was
called James and other Seumas (after an Uncle) but this was Anglicised when
the birth was recorded and that name used when he was called up.
I searched the CWGC database, particularly the 'Addition Information' for
local place names. 'Soldiers Who Died In The Great War' was most use with
having the place of birth and enlistment recorded particularly on Ancestry
where you can search without a surname - at one time Ancestry had these two
fields transposed but I think it is corrected now. With just about every
war memorial I found people born or enlisted locally who were not on the war
memorial.
I was recently contacted by a local school teach who is going to France and
Belgium with a school party and will be visiting some war cemeteries. They
were hoping to find some locals in the cemetery so they could leave
something on the grave but even though it is one of the largest cemeteries I
just could not find any. With so many schools planning similar visits over
the next year I suggested to the CWGC and FMP that they try to
cross-reference the CWGC database and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War to
help search a particular cemetery for local servicemen but it does not seem
possible.

Subject: [GWYNEDD] War Memorial in Deganwy
As 2014 will be the centenary of the start of the First World War I am
beginning to research the men who are named on the War Memorial in All
Saints Church, Deganwy. There are 105 named on the memorial - some are also
named on the Llandudno War Memorial. There are quite a few Joneses, Roberts,
Hughes and Williams but there are also more unusual surnames which are
easier to trace.
