1 The Established Church is the Church of England, The Church in Wales
didn't come into existence until the 1920's
2 Although he had died, John Thomas was still the groom's father, so his
name would have to be included on the relevant part of the certificate.
Sometimes, but not always, the word deceased (or the abbreviation dec) was
added in the case of a father who had died by the time of a marriage
3. There were no formal rules about who was allowed to witness a marriage.
Women and children were occasionally witnesses. In general the witnesses
were a friend of the groom and a relation of the bride, but there is no
guarantee that this is the case on any individual certificate. Some churches
seem to have used the same people to witness every marriage in the church
almost like "expert witnesses". So the names' of witnesses might provide
a
clue about family connections, but they don't offer any hard facts.
All the best
Alwyn

Subject: [GWYNEDD] question abt. marr. cert.
I just received a marriage certificate , my first ,and two things I
don't
understand :
1. it has " Married in the Parish Church according to the rites and
ceremonies of the Established Church "then a long blank space, "by me"
then underneath that is signed I. Williams Ellis because of the
blank
space I'm not sure if they were Married according to the rites of the
Church
of Wales or if the Church was used for one of the other denominations
weddings, it was 1842.
2. the groom put in a fathers name as John Thomas Occ: collier . I had
been told
the father died when the groom was a small boy , now I don't know
what to think or do.
I don't know what the customs in that time period was but the witness's
were men, a Robert Lewis and David Jones . any advise most welcome .
