Hi Patricia,
Thanks for the 1871 census entry, from which it seems that J.R. Brown was
Louisa's son, not her husband - hence her name before his on the dedication.
Yes, quite likely the child was named after her and she was a godparent.
Hence the christening mug. The Jones family lived in Caelleppa, Bangor and
Louisa's grandfather Henry Jones had been a draper and tailor in High Street.
David R. Price wrote to me on the CAE list with the following information
about the Brown family:
"John Robert Brown was a son of Bangor printer John Brown, and grandson of
John Brown (Senior), who was the original editor of Bangor newspaper 'North
Wales Chronicle' from 1827 to 1850. The Brown family sold the newspaper in
1850, but continued for many years as printers.
In 1991, about a dozen descendants of John Brown (Senior) held a family
reunion in Bangor, and invited me to give a talk on local history. Some had
travelled from Australia and Canada. I could give you the address (off-list)
of Harold R. Brown, of Abbotsford, B.C., Canada, (a member of Gwynedd FHS)
if you like."
I don't think the Browns were related to my Louisa Jane Jones - not closely,
at any rate - as I have the grandparents of Louisa Jane, from Bangor and
Anglesey (but Louisa Brown was born Llanrug). They seem to have been family
friends and I just wanted to know a little about them - which you and other
list members have excellently provided, as so often!
Regards
Bill

Hi Bill,
I have found Louisa Brown and family on the 1871 census in Bangor. I was
wondering that perhaps they were neighbours of your great aunt's family, but
could not find any Jones' in same buildings and row. I could send this
census page off line to you if you like.
I wonder if perhaps they were your great aunt's Godparents?
Do you know if your gt aunt was born on Bangor?
Patricia

Does anyone know of the above - Louisa & J.R.Brown of Bangor?
My interest is because these two gave a christening mug to my great aunt,
Louisa Jane Jones, in 1871. I have no idea what the connection is.
According to the 1881 census, Louisa Brown was a widow aged 58 and
proprietress of a printing works at 243 High Street, Bangor.
