Dear Jim,
Your msg about your gt gt gt grandfather caught my eye. Unlike a lot of us,
you are in the fortunate position of looking for a (relatively) uncommon
name meaning that you needn't necessarily know where in Wales your ancestor
came from to be hopeful of finding him with some certainty.
I would start with his marriage to Mary, presumably before he left the UK...
you have a date from the birth of what you assume to be their eldest child
(assuming they didn't have an older one who died or was left behind with
relatives).
There are 2 ways of looking for the marriage - (1) the indexes to national
marriages (civil registration - formerly called the St Catherine's House
indexes) available on microfiche if you can get hold of them locally and (2)
using the local family history societies throughout Wales who have mostly
produced their own marriage indexes. However, I would suggest the former.
Some kind soul on the list may have a look in the 1851 and 71
Ancestry.com
censuses as I am sure you will find the family there too... beware of
transcription errors as in the previous posting tho... I can imagine that
transcribers could easily mistake Christmas for Christopher in some hands...
Good luck and what an unusual name!
