Angharad,
I have a Capt. John HUGHES (1758-1845) in Amlwch, Ang. I can't find his
parents but think I should be looking for Hugh ap ___, Hugh ap John, or
Hugh Jones, etc. Do you have any advice as to the possiblities?

Although other's have replied I thought I would add the following bit of
information.
I think you can take it that you have the burial of th right children.
This
patronymic system was quite usual in Wales before they adopted English
habbits! Also the ap form was used. Sometimes both ways were used in
parish
records - depending on the curate. And you can be quite sure that David
would be called Dafydd; only in English language formal documents would
he
probably become David. I have seen two brother's with different surnames
-
one would be John David and the other e.g. Richard Thomas. In my
genealogy
program although the parents surname like yours treats the father's
surname/second name as the surname I can delete that and place in what I
wish. Can you do this? This patronymic system or something similar is
very
common when the birth of a child is registered in Welsh speaking Wales
today

Subject: [GWYNEDD] Welsh naming system
Can someone help me with the confusion of Welsh names? I have the
publications of Llanuwchllyn Parish Registers here at home and I've
been
looking up the baptisms of the children of David Thomas [Dafydd
Tomos]
and
Catherine Rowland. In this publication when there is a surname it is
used,
so may I assume if there's no surname the name will go by the Welsh
system?
Example:
1745: 20 Dec: Catherine daughter of David Thomas and Catherine
[baptized].
1748: 4 Jan: Catherine David is buried.
Is there a way to tell if these two are the same person. Later in 1748
a
daughter in this family is named Catherine.
Another example:
1745: 20 Dec: John, son of David Thomas and Catherine is baptized.
1746: 7 Jan: Jno David, infant is buried
In the latter instant it appears to be that it would be John ap David.
So - How do I enter this into my genealogy program? I use Personal
Ancestry
File.
Since the father is entered as David Thomas, my program wants to treat
Thomas as the surname.
I'll appreciate any help you can give me.
