Hello Julian,
I have a marriage between Griffith Roberts and Catherine Roberts in 1847.
Both of full age. The father of Griffith was Cadwaladr Roberts, and the
father
of Catherine was Robert Hughes.
Now, I do know that Catherine Roberts was born in Llanllyfni, but have not
been able to find her baptism because I have not looked hard enough. Robert
Hughes was a quarryman.
As you will realise, Catherine's birth certificate would not be available
to
find out her mother's name because it would have been before civil
registration. The witnesses are no help because they came from the family
of
Griffith, not Catherine.
Catherine began her relationship with Griffith because she lived at the
farm
in Llanenddwyn at the time of the marriage. So, I must assume that she was
a
servant first.
I put the surname change from Roberts to Hughes down to the patrynomic
system of naming. i.e. her father being Robert Hughes, she took his first
name as
her surname. I found this naming system prevalent in that area during
these
times.
The only other clue I might hve, is that I do have a cousin living in
Buffalo, New York, who carries the Christian name of Dorothy. Although we
both
carry a different surname from Roberts or Hughes, it is because a Roberts
female
married a Wynne.
I hope this is a little bit helpful at least.
Best regards,
Maureen
Rhondda
