Unfortunately, Ian, some ROs have now ceased to photocopy certain documents,
for example, original Parish Registers.

I think Mike John and William make a very interesting and useful point and
this
debate will, no doubt, arouse some differing points of view to my own
sincerely held. However, the question of us, as taxpayers, already paying
for these resources is a little far from the mark as first, our individual
contributions thru' tax will actually add to very little.
As ROs will photocopy or photograph records, I cannot see the added value
of
digital photography to the user unless escaping photocopying charges is
one of them.
I would worry that many users would not abuse the possibility of
photography but a
few might - can you imagine the whole NLW BT/probate
collection being available on line, for example?
If I was the owner of a resource like the NLW's collection or that of any
of
our local ROs, I would want to protect my financial interest in the
climate of efficiency, financial pressure (whether right or wrong) and other
current or possible future constraint.
