Your point is well taken. I've got a bit of an update on this now. As I
received no offers as yet to go the Dolgellau, I phoned them and found them
very helpful.
Firstly, the corrected my date of Baptism for William to 7/10/1810 which
now makes the potential marriage entry of John Williams and Margaret Jones
more suitable and makes it more feasible that he was a widower.
Also, the other intriguing bit was that the Parish Record entry of Baptism
for William Griffiths didn't show his father as a Blacksmith but as a
"Gent"
What do you make of that??

The baptism for a William Griffith, son of John Williams *could* be your
later William Jones. I just wanted to make that general point.
Surnames were very fluid at this time. In fact, It seems that -
unfortunately - just at the cross-over between PRs and civil registration
that surnames were possibly most fluid for many people.
