Hi
My husband's paternal great great grandfather was born in Cors yn
Odyn in the parish of Llandyfrydog in Anglesey according to his
obituary. Could someone please tell me what Cors Yn Odyn means and
where it might be in Anglesey?
Thanks,
Donna
cors = bog, fen, marsh
odyn = kiln (lime-kiln)
y; yr; 'r = the (y before a consonant, yr before a vowel and h; 'r
after a vowel.)
The place-name would be Cors yr Odyn [Marsh (of) the Kiln] - the 'of'
is implied.
Llandyfrydog village is within kilometre square SH4485.
To view the location go to
http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm
and paste or type in the grid reference SH440850. You will be
presented with either a section of the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 or
1:50,000 map. You can zoom in or out as you wish and also view
adjacent sections via the zoom-snake in the panel on the left.
The place-name does not appear on the OS 1:50,000 map. Llandyfrydog
is a long rectangular-shaped parish. Try searching an area 10 km
North-South and 5 km East-West centred roughly on the village using
the 1:25,000 map. The blue grid is the kilometre grid.
