Hi
Yes Ffrwd Ysgyfarnog are a row of three or 4 cottages in a hamlet about half
a mile from Llandwrog village. I had never heard them called anything other
than Ffrwd - as they are still known today and nicely done up. The smithy
was across the road or lane to the second cottage that was for a long
period - at least in from the 1920/1930s a post office and shop. It was the
home of our next door neighbour who passed away a few years ago. I looked at
the 1851 census to check the neighbouring place names. I noticed that there
were just the 3 Ffrwd - but my old neighbour stated there were 4 houses and
he listed the inhabitants of each during his childhood. I don't know the
area well enough to explain this. I also noticed that you gave the
impression that the son John and family lived there but I discovered this
was not the case. As to John Jones being a farmer - there must have been
some land adjacent to his end cottage although the census states the acreage
is not known. But it cannot have been a farm as we would imagine a farm. I
wonder whether another cottage was added on that land at a later period. But
the fact that in the 1861 census he is described as a blacksmith at the age
of 84 and in a different handwriting to the original entry makes me wonder
whether he helped his neighbour out at times. The original description of
infirm gives the impression that John Jones would not have been up to the
arduous work of a blacksmith The Ffrwd blacksmith according to my neighbour
lived in the second of the 4 houses and it would seem that your family were
in the 3rd cottage.
Have you seen the two trees submitted on Ancestry? I just found them but
very little information but it does list children and gives the year of John
Jones's death at Ffrwd. It looks to me as if one of them has tagged an
unconnected family onto yours and given John Jones a second wife - a Mary
Morgan!. How many times have I seen this on Ancestry trees.
Hope this little will help

Subject: [GWYNEDD] John Jones, Blacksmith, Ffrwd Ysgyfarnog, Llandwrog
I am hoping someone may be able to tell me something about Ffrwd
Ysgyfarnog
which I believe is near Llandwrog.
I have found my GGGG Grandfather , John Jones living there with his wife
Mary ( nee Hughes) and son John and his family in the 1851 Welsh Census.
John was then 73. He was born about 1778. Their occupations were given as
Farmers and Blacksmiths .
I am wondering if someone could tell me if Ffrwd Ysgyfarnog is a small
settlement or is it a farm? I am told that Ffrwd means stream or brook.
I would be most grateful for any help or assistance.
With very best wishes,
