An exhibition on the First World War in Snowdonia will be held at St
Julitta's Church in Capel Curig during the summer and the organisers are
appealing for more contributors to come forward through their newly
established website <
http://www.ww1insnowdonia.org> www.ww1insnowdonia.org.
The Friends of the Church have held summer exhibitions at the Church for
several years and the preparations are well under way for this summer's
exhibition which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and will open on
26 July.
The website has just been launched and here you can see the background to
the Group of Friends, the research topics, the names on the Capel Curig
memorial. Whilst there will be a focus on the War Memorial in Capel Curig,
there will be features on many aspects of the war in Snowdonia in general
and stories from other villages as can be seen from the Research Topics
section. Some sections have been competed but others are blank because the
work is not yet complete. The researchers are continuing to work on
various topics but there is an invitation to the public to send in
contributions and this can be done through the website.
I went to see the Group's exhibition for the first time two years ago. That
was an exhibition on WW2 in Snowdonia. I was very impressed with the
content of the information shown and the professionalism of the
presentations on the display boards and I learnt a lot. There was also a
well-produced booklet. This made me go to see another excellent exhibition
last summer commemorating 60 years since the conquest of Everest and the
strong links to Snowdonia.
When I saw a notice of a public meeting last November to discuss this
summer's exhibition on WW1 I went along. This led to contact with Harvey
Lloyd, the Chair of the Friends, and other members and I told them of my war
photos and postcards which were relevant to Penmachno and Colwyn Bay. This
led to an invitation to join and I was delighted to become involved with
this innovative and energetic group.
The Group will welcome contributions from anyone with relevant information,
photos, postcards, letters etc. This can include lives of men and women who
served in the war, their families back home or the effect on work and life
in general in Snowdonia during the war and its aftereffects. You can do
this through the website. Whilst the website is in English the display
material in the Exhibition will be fully bilingual and contributions in
Welsh will be welcomed.
