Thank you very much, Ian. Your several suggestions will certainly be
investigated further.
Thank you also for the information you posted below of Hywel Roberts'
continued work with World War I soldiers and families.

Dear Janice,
Land Tax (usually 1783-1818 for N Wales), parish registers,
monumental inscriptions and wills are the most obvious sources that
spring to mind.
The National Library (
www.llgc.org.uk) also has a searchable
catalogue which I have found useful for parish searches and house
name searches. Spelling (and transcription) varies so it is wise to
take a wide approach to searching e.g. Parish, personal name
(Christian name or surname) (if unusual enough), house name + parish.
Also, from the Land Tax, and later tithe apportionment (ca. 1840s)
you might gain an idea of whether the property was owned outright or
a property belonging to one of the estates - if the latter, the
estate papers become a potential source. For example, properties
might be mentioned by name +/- tenants given in property sales
between the "great and good". Rentals &c. Even, for some parishes,
manorial records. I have even had success from google and google
books/google scholar - try them.
One caution, sometimes what looks like a farm name is a township or
hamlet - examples might be Penycaerau in Aberdaron (both farm and
hamlet) or Pandy, Llanuwchllyn (2 farms and a township).
Another caution - houses changed their names and a ty'r efail (or
smithy house) might very possibly have been a lean-to attached to
another property - the census and maps can help decide this point -
what are the neighbouring properties on census &c.
There are 23 Penrhosllugwy wills 1800-1858 in llgc.org.uk: none are
directly linked to Ty (r) Efail (Efal) (also written Refal/Refail) -
it would be worth trawling those and looking for a mention.
1750-1800, there are 33 wills for the same parish: none directly
mentioning Ty(r) Efail. I didn't see any smiths either but that would
be worth looking for.
Wills are available online at the above link.
The Ordnance Survey 1:25 000 map could be also a useful thing to look
at. The older issues (held locally) carry even more detailed
information.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Thompson
