Alwyn,
thanks for looking :) Silly question: Would I be right in understanding that the
BT's you looked in cover only Merionethshire, or do they cover a wider geography?
I've only just started to hit Welsh-specific obstacles in my research, so, beyond the
BT's, are there any other sources that I should be trying to check into? I am still
reading John & Sheila Rowland's "Welsh Family History" to get a better
understanding of my options :)
Thanks again!
Richard

I have had a look through the BT's for 1809-1811, but couldn't spot your
Owen in any of them.
However the BT's for this period are not in the best condition, so it is
possible that he is there but illegible.
All the best
Alwyn

Subject: [GWYNEDD] Dolgellau BT lookup?
Dear Listers,
I am looking for this man : Owen Williams, b.20th
April 1810, in the BT's for Dolgellau. His father
would be a Lewis Williams b~1790, who was a Draper or
Draper/Tailor, and may be recorded as a Pattern Maker.
Owen first appears in the Liverpool Gore's in 1839 as
a Grocer/Provision Dealer, and then the Burgess role
in 1841. It takes two years to become a Burgess, so he
likely came to Liverpool in 1839, aged 29. The 1841
Gore's calls him a Grocer/Provision Dealer, but the
1841 census calls him a Baker. By 1845 Gore's also
calls him a Baker/Flour dealer. So it's possible he
served as a baker's apprentice when in Wales.
The archivists in Aberystwyth says this Liverpool
census for Lewis, the father, refers to Dolgellau.
Name: Lewis Williams
Age: 62
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1789
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Dallgald, Wales <------
Our grt-grt-grandfather, Owen's youngest son James
Aubrey Williams, trained as a Tailor in Amlwch. He
appears there in the 1881 census living with a brewer
(Hughes). I don't know who he was apprenticed to,
though there are three Williams' that are Tailor's in
Amlwch at time. Family tradition perhaps.
If anyone feels able to help by identifying Owen's
birth in the BT's, or even just to rule it out, I
would be very grateful.
Regards,
Richard
