I would have thought that the most likely explanation would be that Griffith
Richards was Owen's "step" father, and that Ellen Evans had either been
married to or had an illegitimate child from a man called William before
marrying Griffith.

Subject: [GWYNEDD] WILLIAMS/RICHARDS - Llanddwywe
I am somewhat confused about the following patronymics.
Having just received the 1842 marriage certificate for Owen WILLIAMS (of
Henborth, Llanddwywe) and Ellen EVANS (of Coedtalywern), I discover that
Owen WILLIAMS' father is Griffith RICHARDS. Ellen's father is Hugh EVANS.
The children of this marriage are variously recorded as RICHARDS or
WILLIAMS.
I'd be very grateful if someone could please explain where the WILLIAMS
surname might have arisen from? Also where might Coedtalywern be
located?
Many thanks
