Hi Lindsay,
Thank you very much for your response. Your explanation really helped sort
out things!
My ancestor's name was affected by patronymics. He was a son of Peter
Hughes so the name on his wedding certificate is David Peter. However, he
also sometimes used the name "Hughes" as a surname, finally settling on
David Hughes Peters.
Thanks again!
Kathy

Just to add a bit ......
Llanfair is a small parish immediately to the south of the parish of
Llandanwg (which is the parish containing Harlech). Apart from Harlech
itself, the remainder of Llandanwg and the whole of Llanfair were very rural
and Harlech was the only sizeable settlment for both parishes, so people
from Llanfair seemed to see Harlech as their town, and quite a lot of people
from Llanfair seemed to use Llandanwg church (at least it seems that way
from the records).
There was a church in Llanfair so Llanfair would probably the best place for
you to look first for the baptism, but the register for Llandanwg has many
records of baptisms, marriages and burials for people from Llanfair, so they
could well be recorded there.
Speaking from experience, patronymics was alive and well in this area until
almost the end of the 19 century so your Peter Hugh(es) is likely to be the
son of Hugh 'something or other' and Elizabeth, the dau of Morris
'somethingorother'.

Dear List Members,
I have an ancestor who is said to be from Harlech, Llanfair, and Gwynedd.
I
have looked on the map and it looks like Llanfair and Harlech are
two
separate areas (towns) located very close to each other. It looks like
Gwynedd is a larger area that possibly encompasses both Llanfair and
Harlech. I am trying to pinpoint where my ancestor is from and find out
which parish recorded his birth.
David Hughs(es) - born March 10, 1810. Parents were Peter Hughs(es) and
Elizabeth Morris.
If someone could enlighten me on these geographical locations, and if
someone has information as to what parish his birth is recorded at, I
would
be most appreciative.
Sincerely,
KT

Hi KT
The town of Harlech itself was Llandanwg Parish according to genuki:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Llandanwg/index.html
Llanfair juxta Harlech is described here
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Llanfair/index.html
Both places were in the old county of Merionethshire but now in the later
named/defined county of Gwynedd.
