Subject: [GWYNEDD] Meuric ap Llewellyn
Dear Kay,
There were probably hundreds of Meuric ap Llewellyns in and around 1400. It
would be essential to know a little more. The database Betty mentions is
great but is based on a slightly flawed book (JE Griffiths "Pedigrees...").
Probably the most reliable source is PC Bartrum's "Welsh Genealogies" which
is over about 20 volumes. There is, however, at least a volume (in separate
issues) of corrigenda, meaning that the originals need to be
cross-referenced! An online version is hoped to come out this year or
next(?)
To be certain of your connections, you should really be giving a little more
background. In the sea of patronymy, no one can be identified by name
alone. Location, connections and biographical information (where possible -
not possible for everyone, of course) are required.
The question of "royalty" is interesting - there wasn't the same social
structure in (Welsh, pre-1283) mediaeval Wales as in England. There was a
royal or ruling class, a free class and a bonded class but that's about it,
simply. I wondered how you know he wasn't "royal" if you don't know
anything about him!
Yours,
Ian

Hi Listers, I'm new to the list and fairly new to my Welsh ancestry.
I pick up Meuric ap Llywellyn (hope I spelled that right) in the late
1400s. I have names of his ancestors but since they are not "royalty"
I have not been able to find information on them. Can anyone
recommend books where I can find these people? I have not had any
luck getting books on the Welsh - even through my library. If anyone
needs more names, I can furnish them.
Thanks
Kay in CA
